Hello Daniel,

I enjoyed this story. It's a terrific contest entry. We have a natural park near our house and walk there often. It has deer and coyotes living there in the wild. We love spotting the deer. Coyotes not so much.

- "taking him (further) out..." - farther is the better choice because far indicates it measures distance.

Best wishes in the contest.

Sincerely Joy xx

Oh, no! The film was ruined. I had that happen once years ago when something was very special to me. Still, you have memories and nothing can take that away. I'm 24 years old than you, and I was getting chill bumps just reading about it. What an awesome adventure.

Well written and attention holding. Great story.

Wow! That sure would have been awesome to have seen happened!
I love deer, I love wildlife of all kinds and to be that close to it would be quite a moment to savor.
How upsetting for the pictures to not have turned out, but at least the pictures in your minds can last forever. I bet the ladies wish they would have gone canoeing after hearing your story. :)
Great job with the story.

Daniel: keep the memories in your thoughts. Glad the doe was able
to be strong enough to swim in the fast currents. Get your son a
digital camera or have him use the cell phone. Treasure your outdoor
time with your sons.

We are in a blizzard with 15 inches of snow and 50 mph winds.

Thank you so much for your review and kind words. Yes, we have digital cameras now. In fact, it is my 2nd one. I've already lost one on another canoe trip. We tipped over and the camera was around my neck. My son yelled, "Dad, the camera." I looked down, and the camera was submerged. It did not survive after drying out.

Some adventure! I worried about the fawn. Glad it was okay in the end. Hard to believe anyone uses FILM these days. He would not have lost his photos if he'd had a digital camera. Too bad.

Thank you for your review and kind words. Yes, this was back around 2002 I think. The little throw-away cameras were being used for everything back then. Thank you again.

Thanks so much for the true to life story. It reminds me of my childhood in
big Bear Lake. I like the complete description of the faun swimming across to the
riverbank and still wonder if it turned out OK.

Thank you so much for your review and kind words. I am confident the fawn's mother was not far away once he reached shore. Thank you.

This was an amazing experience. Your so fortunate to have witnessed it. You really told your story well. I could feel myself tensing up as the fawn was struggling.

It's a shame you didn't have a video camera with you. Of course, it would have been up to the boys to use it, You had your hands full with the currents.

It's a good piece, Daniel. You might consider offering it to Field and Stream genre magazines.

Your writing has put me right there with you in
the canoe. You say it best and describe all the details
with such great description. Plus the sharing with the
boys sure sounds like a memory. And the picture adds to
the story quite well. Keep on writing. EL
