Ah, the contest winner. Rightly so. My favorite HDT writing? The war of the ants.
Thoreau did indeed shun the Rush and look at the world about him. Excellent.

wish to goodness I had a 6 to give you, but anyway, congratulations on your win! With your qualifications, how could you not? It is well deserved.
This is wonderful - the whole thing - but love "stuck inside your cranium."
Mr. Thoreau would probably give you an A+. :) or make you his ghost writer!
Beautiful and sends a good message. well done. (me saying well done is like a student saying it to his teacher. never-the-less...)

I loved teaching Thoreau and Emerson to my juniors in high school. You cover Thoreau's philosophy in the first stanza and Emerson's advice on writing in the second and third. Best of luck in the contest.

I, too, enjoyed doing so with my juniors in a class called American Studies which combined history and English. Thanks so much for sharing my poem and your thoughtful comments.

This is a very good poem that contains a bit of humor, too, especially in the 2nd stanza with "cranium" which rhymes so well with the end of second line. Time in my garden surely helps my brain to compose poetry all on its own. I'm a Massachusetts native so am knowledgeable about Thoreau and his experience at Walden. Marilyn

Hi Marilyn. I am delighted you enjoyed my open.. Just returned from my first-ever trip to Boston. Did not come close to Walden, however. Loved the city!
-
I'm glad you enjoyed Boston. Having grown up in that neck of the woods myself, the joke is that when in Boston you can see where you want to go but can't get there. I imagine it's only gotten worse over the years. I grew up north of Boston not far from Salem. The coastline is gorgeous all the way up to Maine.
-
Next time I go, it will be by car as I'd love to see that coastline. I've never been to New England.
-
Great. Drive the coastal highway all the way up to Maine. Stop off at Marblehead, Salem, Gloucester, Hampton, Rye, Kittery, Kennybunkport. Get some lobster. You will love it.

Outstanding. a deep and provocative message, one to give thought. I gave this six because of the style, flow, word choice, and accuracy to the format. Well written, and immensely valuable advice. Best of luck
Blessings,

thank you for sharing your version of Thoreau's thoughts on writing. It is so true that in order to write, we must experience things - nature, beauty, love and so many other emotions.
Well done,
