Its setting was perfect, a half staff flag ) because I must agree with you 100%.....it does go perfectly with you writing. An excellent essay, Bill. General Sherman said, "War is Hell," and only in recent modern history has there been some expectation of avoiding civilian casualties. The only point of war is to win. And that's after diplomacy has failed. The US is the most compassionate of winners in the history of the world. Consider the Marshall Plan. :) Nancy

Interesting essay and all of these are very good points, my friend. We have certainly committed our share of atrocities, but that doesn't mean we should agree with and support other countries in doing the same. I would hope that we and others can learn from our mistakes~Debbie

God, you're so good! I've missed reading your work. I don't have a clue how I lost track...
"All's fair in love and war", supposedly. I guess that applies to the Western World's version of war though, right? (Yep - saw that movie, and wouldn't mind sitting through it again - it was great!)
"...some of the atrocities committed by Americans..." - no apostrophe
How well I remember the wonderful story about you and Virgil Gates...I SO loved it!
"psychologists" - spelling
What a shocking lie your father was told - I've never heard this before, and it's fascinating information that doesn't surprise me, sadly...
This is a wonderful piece!!!

There is not a word of your essay that I could deny. Yes, these things happened. However, I feel it unfair to cast the stigmatization onto the American people. Place it directly where it belongs. The government. The government who has come to look upon themselves as being "above the law," and the destroyer of citizen trust and respect.

thank you so much for sharing this essay on America. I understand what you mean and I think you are right for the most part. We do have a bad reputation in the world and trump is not helping.

Really nice work on this essay. I think it is important not to bury the history of our country, or we will be doomed to repeat it. Unfortunately, in the context of what is currently taking place, we have a long way to go in many areas of civil rights.
I can think of hundreds of examples, so would like to share a few.--Suggest so I would.
Take care,
Russell

Comment from Just A. Pretense
Women won the right vote by a single vote (one senator had originally been inclined to vote against, but his mother begged him not to). As for the the comment about Democrats and Republicans, the voting platforms were vastly different then. Prior to the 1960's (massive shift in voter demographic because a Democratic president signed the Civil Rights Act even though he knew he was committing political suicide with his party), the modern Democrat would have identified more with Republican and modern Republican more with Democrat on most social issues.
Just a few technical errors below, but overall, awesome piece! I agree with you, we can have pride for being a part of this country. It shouldn't be blind pride though, and we should not force our ideologies on other people. I am a teacher in Texas, and I am ashamed to admit that because of a law recently passed in the last few years, any new history textbooks printed for use exclusively in Texas will no longer use the term slave, mention the Ku Klux Klan, cover Jim Crow laws or describe the atrocities we committed against Native Americans. So, unless a student is going to college, they will never learn about those things in class.
"A million more were injured[,] and more than a million were left homeless."
"A similar fire raid took place over Dresden, Germany in February of 1945."

A brilliant article.
Yet, our expectation is for other countries to be just like us, right now. ~ absolutely.
I probably would not be here if I lived in Nazi Germany - I have an entire alphabet soup of blood in my veins, from India over Kenya, Britain, Greece and Germany. And one phenomenon about humankind that never ceases to amaze me is: Why do those of us who commit atrocities against fellow members of their species convince themselves that they committed them because they were and therefore still are SUPERIOR to those who became victims of their evil deeds?
There's no longer any stigma in being homosexual in Europe and the West in general, but 30, 40 years ago homosexuality was not only a disease but also a sin, and a powerful tool of international political blackmail in the Cold War years. But once the West changed their view of homosexuality, they want to force down the throat of the whole world, regardless of culture or religion. Now, imagine the Jews or the Moslems or Christians in Africa were the first to make homosexuality "normal", then tried to force it down the throat of Europe and the West: how African, Islam and Jewishness would have been tarred and feathered!
I often think about such things, stuff twisted by one group of people BECAUSE THEY CAN and feel disappointed in our species.
BTW, I've posted your article in my Google+ and Facebook.
Thanks for it.
Regards,
Apky
