Your poem is excellent, Judy. Congratulations belatedly on winning the contest with this fine entry. I think there are good people everywhere, too. They seem to come out of the woodwork when we need them and we think no one will understand or care. I also go to water exercise class at the Y. It's therapeutic and a lot of fun. Blessings to you. Thank you so much. Yes, they were there for me that day and it really helped me. People truly are our blessings in life when we let them in. thank you so much for reading and hearing my thoughts.

Friends can be the best healing help anyone can get, Even in time of disperse it seems like the best of people can and do come out. I am happy that received that from your friends, that goes to show you that God has a plan all along. GB

How lovely at people were there for you. Quiet strangers who noticed your pain and confusion and were prepared to empathise. It gives one hope and optimism for the world which is so often uncaring and oblivious,

Your poem amazes me with its depth not only of trying to comprehend the grief over the loss of your husband but of the generosity of the widowed women in your swim class who

talk to me
They don't pressure me
and they allow me the grief I really don't understand.

You make an effective use of anaphora, or repeated words, with your opening lines:

I meet heroes every day
People who understand life
People who listen
People who never judge
People who remember their own sadness
or joy
or triumphs
or failures
or griefs

You swim through confused emotions of not missing him. Finally, your heroes help you to release:

My tears become part of the water
a small increment of salt in a chlorine pool
and I realize heroes are everywhere
and never even know

Their act of kindness
is cherished

Thank you for sharing your most excellent and heartfelt Everyday Heroes in Our Lives poem. I wish you much success in the contest.

Some of the things which impressed me about this: a sense of ambivalence you had about your ex-husband; i.e. there are some fine memories. How lucky you and the other people in the pool to have each other. And the unique and different venue for the event to take place: in a pool.

This was an emotional and tender writing.

Ambivalence, what a great word. You nailed it with that word. That strange feeling of not knowing which side you are on, just knowing that somehow it matters. Thank you for once again showing me that people understand me.

Grief pours from this poem. I really like how you shift the stanzas as if they are sinking into a deep pool, themselves. My condolences if you have lost your ex husband. It is an interesing read because it makes me wonder how I would feel if the same were to happen to me. It is intriguing to find that the author is conflicted by their emotions. I like the line, " A small increment of salt in a chlorine pool." It is inspirational to think about the unsung heroes who help us without even realizing that they are. Good luck with the contest. -Christina

once an enemy once an love. love or hate our emotions is our own enemy we have for that person. once we feel for someone once we hate someone we will always remember that person in our memory. your poem was emotionally written and it read emotionally. thanks for the read. "your so vein" means mood or humor.

So true, Anonymous Poet, and your point is poignantly delivered and well conveyed.
I enjoy volunteering my time in nursing homes around our area visiting elderly shut-ins who either no longer have any family left of their own who can come and visit with them, or their families simply do not come to visit them, for whatever reasons.
Do I do it so I can be called a "hero"?
No, of course not.
Do I do it for the recognition, or for what I might get out of it?
Hardly. In fact, I tell very few people that I do it at all.
I do it because these elderly folk deserve the utmost respect and to die with dignity. They are human beings who have feelings and dreams just like the rest of us.
I do it because it is something I would want someone to do for me if the shoe were on the other foot.
Excellent poem.
I wish you the very best of luck in the contest.

I am so happy and touched that you liked my poem. And see, I knew all along that the horror poet, in reality, is a wonderful person who visits old folks homes. I knew you were special from the begining and you probably know which poet I am.

I think this poem really captures this complicated moment of grief for someone you had a complicated relationship with. The poem kind of tells us as it is. I liked the tone, the repetitions that kind of plug you into all kinds of directions at once 'Or joys, or triumphs, or failures or griefs" and "I don't miss him, I wish things were different, I question the times I hurt him". I loved this image of you swimming away from the pain, in the water. Its kind of a moment of healing, we really see the pain dissolving in the water, and you moving on in life. great poem estory

an extremely well written free verse poem
the content is well represented with powerful imagery
you have brought the scenes and the characters to life
I do see that it is biographical however HERE you have written a great piece of poetry
and it is your writing talent which has made this a really good read
expressed with emotion for sure
Have a smiley day my friend and after your trauma God Bless you and your young son
there is no doubt that you have written a beautiful and fitting tribute to those Heroes who get you through your days
after all the grief has been spilled please do not feel guilt about mixed thoughts
as you have said there was abuse ;you not expected to blank that from your memory that kind of experience can not help but color your reactions
there is only one thing to do;
forgive yourself for any doubt or confusion
then forgive him for the life he led
take care lovely lady

Your advice is needed and well taken. It is astounding what normal people can give to each other when they open their hearts to each other. I am thrilled with the six stars. Forgiveness is the road to contentment. I so appreciate and will sit under you smileycloud today feeling stronger.
