This is a delightful story. I love your description of the storm, the language is so vivid. We don't get all that much snow where I am, so when we get a heavy fall, it's often as you describe - it makes the landscape seem kind of magical.

Excellent work, I love your description of the simple lifestyle you led as well (at least as far as modern conveniences go). All the best in the contest.

Excellent imagery here: "In the front yard, electric lines were strung across the ground like broken guitar strings."

Ice is amazingly lovely, isn't it? In spite of its ability to cause devastating losses....

I wish you had some photos, too (as per your notes). You sound like the Alaskan Bush People on cable tv, LOL.

Interesting.

Gee, thanks for the comparison to the Bush People. LOL It was very beautiful after the ice storm. I don't know if anyone took any pictures or not. I haven't been able to locate any.

What a beautiful and unique "I Remember" story. I can almost see the ice sculpted land, everything icy cold and blue, so much so it transformed the colour of the dawn. Great descriptions of the storm as well. I particularly enjoyed this: "The wind howled throughout the night; shrieking around our old farmhouse like a demented being." Nice!

Best wishes in the contest!

Thank you. AWESOME is the only way to describe that day. I have never since seen anything even remotely like it.

Your ability to describe the details of your experience is amazing. The imagery brings the story to life for us, and I admire that ability. How fun it must have been for you young ones to have experienced a once in a lifetime adventure.

Great job,
Rhonda

Thank you. Yeah, we had a blast playing on the ice. Now, at 71, it would scare me to death to think of walking on it. LOL

Such memories recalled and told with compassion and truth, nature can be frightening and when it threatens damage it can sometimes also be fatal. You survived the storm with little damage. Cuddling up with your sister must have been great bonding for you, a lovely story, love Dolly x

Thank you. I slept with my sister for years. She used to come home from late night dances, and stick her cold feet on me. LOL

I wish you had a picture too. You described the memory of the storm well. It must have been hard to lose the trees, but at least nothing else was destroyed.

Thank you. Yes, it was tough for my father to lose his young fruit trees. Fruit farming is dependent on weather at any time of year.

This sounds like an awesome sight to behold, but a horrible storm to get through. We have our share of ice in the winter. The landscape looks lovely with its glittery coating, but driving becomes a nightmare. (So many people are afraid of losing their jobs these days, they actually venture out on the ice-skating rinks the roads become.)
Your story is well structured and tells a lovely memory,
~patty~
