An excellent story. I think this is one of the most difficult decisions an adult child has to make for their parents. They reach an age where they need help and the adult children can't be there all the time and have no room to bring them home to be with them or medical conditions are such that they can't.
A well told story and done so with excellent brevity.
Best of luck to you in the contest.

Story about taking mom to the nursing home. At first thought it was going to be about a car wreck. Micrometers entry. Good luck in the contest.

I love the way you write. I love this following description:
Plump full of foreboding, it hovered in heavy shades of depression, drawing my mind to dark places, as I hurried across the street to the parking lot, trying to beat it to my car before the next cloud-burst.

Touched my heart and made me sad for your mom, and especially loved ones having to take her there. We had to do this with my grandmother. Very hard when it comes down to these things we cannot avoid. And Peppy had to stay? :(

This contest entry is well written. I remember when my family had to make the decision about my grandmother going in a nursing home. It's a tough decision to make and it can feel like you are betraying that loved one.

If it makes you feel the slightest bit better, I think many of us wish we had done certain things with our parents differently, but at the time we thought we were doing right.
This was obviously written with regret but also shows your kind and loving heart to carry this grief and regret for so long.
You wrote it well. I'm sure many can relate to it.

We kept her home a long as we could. But when she started running water through a plugged in coffee pot and standing on the table screwing in overhead light-bulbs till they busted into live sockets we had no choice. Thank you for the kind review.

Wow, what a spectacular "I remember . . " response to the writing prompt. I love the drama and the cleanness of your prose which riveted me with your vivid and emotional descriptions. You keep the reader guessing what is going on--a storm, a tornado. Only in the last line did we learn the truth. Storm in storm became a metaphor for the storm of guilt you felt:

"Maybe, I was simply setting the stage for the uncontrollable outburst that forced me off the road halfway home."

Thank you for sharing your exceptional entry in this contest. I wish you much success.

I think you convey well the guilt anyone must feel when and if he or she should have to put a parent into a nursing home, especially without his or her consent. Awful thing to do and to experience. Well done in less than 300 hundred words....

This is so well-written. Your choice of words is excellent and the story you have shared is sad, but honest about a difficult decision and time in your life.

Thank you for the great review and the bonus star. We actually held off longer than what was safe. But that didn't alleviate the guilt. It was fourteen years ago and she has since passed but periodically that memory and that feeling springs out of nowhere.

This is a heart-wrenching story, that is too often true as parents begin to need full-time care and supervision. The only problem I had with the story was determining when the story moved from the present back to the betrayal 14 years ago. A short indication of that, and I think you have a perfect story.

It's terribly hard to come to that decision. The parent gradually slipping backwards and not realising it. Then the family discussion. "Who takes Mom?" Nobody raising their hand so the family looks at a Nursing Home. Then suddenly the aged one realises what the family has done. They cry like babies, beg, plead not to be left there. Oh, yes it is hard to come to that decision. Sincerely Anne.
