You do preach what you practice, Marilyn. (I took your advice on that issue when you were my early guide to FS, and I still hold to it.)

However, i believe the inflicter of the threes or fours is not the torturee, but the aggressor. He/she experiences no empathy when poking the pride of the target (reviews, possibly, the poor slob's only opportunities to manifest power over another person, - pity the poor cat - massaging his/her self-esteem by executing the dual role of judge and jury.

Did I make a good case on who the ired is? Or have I hit on another political divide?

i hope you are enjoying the same kind of good Spring weather that we've had in the city all Winter.

Don

Hi Don. That is exactly my point in the poem. You and I are on the same page with this. The aggressor/reviewer should skip those pieces which raise his/her ire unless that person can impartially review disagreeable content. Not many of us are capable of that. The leads to my footnote. Writers and reviewers aren't as open-minded as we would like to think. Opposition writes raise our hackles. Best to skip over them. Otherwise it takes a big person to give a 5 on skill when he/she dislikes content. Low stars, as you know, hurt the writer's stats. Newbies learn the ropes when they themselves get less than 5 stars. I hope you are well, too. Wisconsin is having snow and fog. Looking forward to spring. Marilyn

i know, I know. I read your notes before I wrote my comments, and, as I said, I, too, don't review stuff I don't care to, and don't give ratings under 5 star, except, rarely, to a beginner - along with some advice, although I usually just give the advice and a fiver, so as not to discourage them when they most need ENcouragement.

But we disagree, or rather, react differently to work with content with we disagree. It rarely raises my ire, and I can review it on it's merit, sometimes pointing that out in my comments. And, from time to time, I also receive good reviews from folks who disagree with my views. and along those lines, I can enjoy talking politics with people of certain dispositions, on the other side of the political divide. You are right if you believe that there usually is no point in arguing politics. Personalities matter a lot.

Take good care of yourself, Marilyn.

Marilyn, there are some things I see the title and I just don't read.
It's hard to review some poems or stories. Some review what they
don't like and then give it a low, low rating just because it isn't to
their liking; not because it's not written well.

I agree with you, Judy. My feeling is that no one should rate a piece on topic and rate low. Better to skip over those entirely. Thank you for reviewing this one. Marilyn

How right you are but, human nature is human nature. People will quibble over just about anything. The more petty, the more enjoyable for them I think.
I agree with from the bottom of my heart.
good luck in the contest.
Take care, Lu

Amen, to this poem. I agree with you wholeheartedly. I am selective about the poems and stories that I read, but I never review a poem unfavorably because I don't like the genre. I always read the poems creatively and objectively, even when I do not agree with the poets' opinions. Obviously, I read poems that I like, and I relate to the subjects. Also, I read poem where I can help the poets to enhance their poems creatively and technically. I read poems where feel that I can help the poet emotionally (I noticed that many poets use this site and their poetry as therapy). I read poems where I learn from its contents.

Thank you for your commentary, Hopefully, the reviewers will heed.

Hi Friend. There is much angst lately on the site, isn't there. To get worked up over topic probably isn't the best choice in reviewing because nobody will change anybody. You are doing it the right way by objectively reviewing. It's impossible for some to do that. Instead they rate low which hurts the writer's stats. Better to just skip those writes which we disagree with IF topic raises reviewer's ire. Thank you for your very nice review and comments. Marilyn

Bravo, personally I skip a great number of poems after doing a read, I cannot review in fairness a work that does not talk to me.

Very good advice in your poem Marilyn. I just did that - read a haiku - didn't care for it - started to review it, then stopped and said 'nope, don't need to.'

Perfect syllable/line count. Good luck in the contest.

Hi Teresa. Thank you for your review. I think it's important that we are true to ourselves in our reading, writing and reviewing. If it feels bad for us to read something, we have to listen to that. I'd rather skip than rate low or feel low. Marilyn

Well said Marilyn. I agree I read what is appealing to me. I don't think I would do justice to a piece if I couldn't give it a healthy review. If it contains a subject matter I don't like or disagree with, I'm not going to review just for the points. Yes, you can tell the signs in a persons review. I love your choice of picture, too. Good luck in the contest. It is a good one.

Hi Marilyn!

What a truthful poem. I enjoyed your sensible admonition of the idea of us all reviewing with an open mind. It really does make perfect sense. Loved the bear pic, too! I hope the judges agree with your sensibilities.

Good luck!

Kim

Bravo! What a great poem. If everyone subscribed to that philosophy, I wouldn't get some of the reviews I do from people who don't like the subject of my writing. I like your message and tone of the poem. More people should read it! Good luck in the contest. John

Thank you, John. My philosophy is that if I cannot honestly give a writer 5 stars, I skip. I don't rate on content either. Marilyn
