I loved the story and the story behind the story, LOL, two for the price of one. It seems that both ploughmen came unstuck in one way or another, at least your father wasn't shot, just stung. I enjoyed both stories of the apples and wish you lots of luck in the contest, :) Sandra xx

Thanks for reading and commenting. My father never forgot that day. Of course, my mother didn't let him forget. LOL

What a great relationship between names. What a great memory even though it was a little tough to go through. Did your father enjoy the nickname?

Thanks for reading and commenting. My father thought the nickname was funny and never let it bother him.

Thanks for taking the time to read and comment. I don't think I would have wanted to be in the way of those horses.

No it was the apple tree that got to me.

A very well-written piece about an apple called the bloody ploughman that reminds you about an incident you father had years ago and your mother nicknamed your father the bloody ploughman due to his wounds that was dripping with blood.

thank you for sharing this somewhat painful story about your Dad. Wasp nests are a danger when plowing; I was with my uncle when we went over one once - it was awful. We were on a tractor, so no horses were stung - but we were!!
Great entry for the apple contest. Good luck to you,

Thank you for reading and sharing your experiences with wasps.

When the horses ran through the barbed wired fence, I was gasping. I could picture the chaos of the horses running, your dad trying to wave the wasps away and get his team calm.
I can only imagine your mother's fright when she saw your dad.
I hope dad and horses were ok.

Thank you. Yep, it must have been a sight to behold. It was long before I was born so I only know what Mom told me.

Back in those days farm work was hard, backbreaking labor. Being a farmer is not the easiest job in the world to have today. But it's a heck of a lot easier now than it was during your father's era.
Just look at that picture!
Interesting story about the ploughman and the apple.
And here I thought this was gonna be a horror story, heh-heh.
Good writing, prettybluebirds.
Best of luck to you in the contest.

Thank you for reading and commenting. I can't imagine what it must have been like to walk behind a team of horses all day.

I don't believe any of us can, PBB. Not in THIS country anyhow.
You're more than welcome. :)

It's funny where names and nick names come from. The story about the yellow jackets reminds me of my brother and I were playing on an old tractor. A few bumble bees flew out to investigate. Soon we were covered by them. My brother almost dies from the attack. I never received a single sting.

Thank you for the great review and your story about bees. I stepped on an underground nest while blackberry picking when I was a kid. I had to take my pants off to get rid of them.
