Poet,

I like your approach to this writing prompt.
You've sent out an important message and
managed to rhyme it as well.

Your middle two lines are very strong and
such a good description that I almost got
PTS symptoms.

Best wishes,
Linda

Hi Linda. It's hard for women (some men are abused, too, so I'm not negating them) to have the courage to get out. First of all, their self esteem is shattered and their mind plays Ping-Pong as the abuser cycles from nice to nasty. Then they have no support because they'd try to hide what's going on for appearance sake, next they don't know where to go. It's a difficult thing. I hope by keeping the topic out there, that if anyone is in this situation they will have the courage to get help and/or e-mail one who can be there for them to help them. Thank you for your review. I know you are now a happy lady now as I am. Hugs, Marilyn

Well done on this monster subject, Marilyn :) You nailed it in a way that wouldn't occur to me. There are too many of these monsters out there. Congratulations on winning this contest.

All such monsters are a scourge on society. A recording of a woman berating her eight-year-old son for voting for Trump in a school exercise just surfaced. Using foul language, she ordered him out of the house where she had a bag packed with his belongings on the porch. She also was insisting he carry a sign she made saying why he had to leave home. He was whimpering and pleading, but she didn't care. His two-year-old sibling had to watch this atrocity, and there was no father in the house. Clearly, those children need to be somewhere else, and that despicable woman ought to be in jail. The picture you found is apt, and most people think of that kind of scenario when domestic abuse is mentioned; but child abuse may be far more common. In any case, your well-written post is noteworthy.

Thank you, Walkerman. Domestic abuse is across the board and knows no gender. I think I mentioned that in my author's note. Thank you for your fine review of my poem. My prayer is that anyone who is in an abusive situation leave. It's not that simple, though. Many times the victim is too immobilized to do anything. My aim in writing about it is to assure any person in this situation that they are not alone. Marilyn

You are welcome, Marilyn. Yes, I did understand your message to abuse victims. That little boy I mentioned had nowhere to go and could not imagine how his mother could turn on him that way. He'll be scarred for life no matter what happens next. Such victims will never see your poem, and have no one to turn to. That does not diminish the value of your post, though. It certainly needed airing. -- Mike

I'm pleased you won this contest, with your poem which highlights the horrific problem of domestic violence. The more it is talked about, the more likely victims are to understand it for what it is, and get out while they can.
Congratulations on your win.

Thank you, Jane. I appreciate your congratulations and your review. Certain important topics have to be kept in the forefront. Women (some men, too) must protect themselves and their children. Marilyn

I like the metaphor utilized. Domestic violence isn't something that anyone wants to believe in.... Monsters. Thirteen syllables per line... you slick little smartie you Marilyn you. Informative. Good poem.

Some monsters eat people. I saw it on an episode of Criminal Minds. They call them Cannibals. Lol.

A very well-written poem. Sometimes the monster is our beloved partner who acts in front of other as the loving partner, but behind closed doors the monster comes out, and the other suffer his punishment.
