This is a wonderful story of heart and faith and friendship. You told it with love and admiration for one of God's less attractive creations. At the sad but happy end, I wished I could have seen him show off in at least one parade.
Nice read.

What a lovely story . . . with a moral.

He sounds like a real champion, and had the wisdom to charm which more than made up for his plain looks and lack of stature.

By the sound of it you know your horses and I'm sure Pete just knew that he was going to a great new home.

By the way, if that's Pete in the photo, he was a little beauty! : )

Thank you. I couldn't get my picture of Pete to upload so I found a horse in FanArt that looks something like him.

An excellent read and a most enjoyable one too. I liked the way you described the search for a new horse and the trouble you had finding one. I am so glad that you did find what you were looking for in Pete and you had twelve good years together

This is a great story, well told and with an apt moral. I believe the writing could be tightened up without losing the folksy character by eliminating occasional unnecessary verbiage. In the third paragraph, I believe spook-proof needs a hyphen. In paragraph four, I would change from giving children (plural) "a short ride" to just "short rides". In the fifth, I think it is adequate to say you placed ads, without specifying "for sale ads". An editor would probably recommend a number of stylistic changes if you were to offer the story for publication.

Thank you, Barry. I'm 70 years old and just started this writing business. I'm learning a lot by being here on fanstory. I recently began a creative writing course too. I hope to get better.

I'm the last person who should get picky, but the course you are taking will surely help with those kinds of things. I'm almost seventy-five and pick up new clues every day.

That was such a lovely story, it just goes to show you never know what is underneath the cover. I think you were blessed to have had such a wonderful horse, and I agree, he chose you, and you belonged to him, not the other way round! Good luck in the contest, this was just lovely. :) Sandra x

a wonderfully written story about your horse Pete, Horses are very smart animals and most really take to the people that love them. Did a great job on the writing, don't see nothing I'd change or fix. thanks for sharing the story of Pete

Thank you, William. Pete was an extraordinary horse. He was more like an overgrown dog than a horse.

Interesting. There are hobby horsemen in this area, and they hold frequent shows at the fairground, so the horse is not an endangered
species here. Well written non fiction, very much to prompt.

Thank you. Horses are marvelous creatures. They are expensive pets to have around but they are worth it.

This is a wonderful story. Sometimes the sparkly things in life don't live up to their sparkle. The tried and true things turn out to be the best and most beautiful. I love all animals and who doesn't love horses? I enjoyed your story. Marilyn

Thank you. Pete was just Pete. I never knew an animal who enjoyed life more than he did.

You were meant to find each other. I don't believe in chance encounters as far as I am concerned everything has a time and will only happen in the correct order. So Pete just waited until you needed him then he was where you would find him. Great story. Regards Anne.

I'm glad you bought Pete - looks aren't everything. And to get a dancing prancing horse is awesome - a perfect parade horse.

Great story writing that held my attention. Good luck in the contest.

Thank you. Pete was quite the character. More like a big dog than a horse. He was a funny and loving animal.
