Hi there
I always admire those who can write a sonnet so well. The artwork reminds me of painting I once owned and am sure that perhaps it is the same artist. It was very valuable and he drew other similar paintings. I cannot offer improvement, as I am no poet. But do recognize a sonnet well written, hence the six stars. I think the bravery of these fishermen is summed up in the last line.
Marion.

Your poetry generates the desire to see such a place so full of things of interest and life presented in a variety of forms. The painting and poem are beautiful. East Anglia must be full of memories for you.

slop-wallow. What a great description. And also 'banshee yell of North Sea winds, excellent. I don't think some folks that live in other countries, can even imagine the fury of the North Sea. I loved your poem. Thanks for sharing. XX

You tell us a good tale Tony in this Heroic Sonnet of the tough life of a fishermen, in days of old, but I suspect nowadays too.
Good ending lines, bringing it all into perspective of - those at home who need to eat. Good one,
cheers,
valda

Hi T, what a lovely sonnet filled with delicious descriptive images about these unsung heroic people that work hard everyday to put food on the table for their families back on land. Your writing brings a deep pathos in the reader for the plight of these men and women. I thought you did a spectacular job with the iambic meter and the whole sonnet was an excellent argument to the narrator's POV--one of deep respect and admiration for the struggles of these fishermen.

I like the words

"These winter fishing fleets that strain and schlep
their laden nets of mack'rel, cod and skate
have weathered fearsome storms with mighty waves
when fishermen themselves are tossed as bait
for kraken monsters, deep in briny graves."

This poem is well-written and in a very good format as well. It has good poetic language and flows well within its thoughts and phrases. This was just an excellent poem to have read and written this response for... John

This is a stunning Heroic Sonnet, Tony. I love the scene you paint that starts with the fishing fleet back home and safe at anchor, and let's us see the shore birds and calm that surrounds them, and then tells us of the not-so-safe venture to sea where the crews encountered storms and waves that brought some harrowing experiences to those that lived through them, and a briny grave to those that didn't. The sea is a bounty, yet it can be very unforgiving to those that venture out onto it. I like how you end the poem with the practicality that these folks risk their lives so that their families will have something to eat, and/or that the sale of the catch will bring prosperity to their lives.
Excellent work, as always.
Rose.

Beautiful painting that complements your lengthy Sonnet very well. I get why so long, it is a very old form. Winter at sea brings it's own risks but mouths have to be fed. And all before it. It rhymes well and has meter all the way.

The poetic imagery was altogether outstanding in its nautical phraseology and terminology. It captured the essence of the moored fleet perfectlyl, while calling up the dangers with finesse. An exquisite Heroic Sonnet, that painted the scene in colorful words. Loved the aureole through mists, the jostling slop-wallowing masts, banshee yell of the North Sea winds from Russian Steppes, and fishermen tossed as bait. A brilliant piece, masterfully composed.
