Executed perfectly and sets its own pace which the ear and the body must follow in order to not go overboard themselves. Hard, hard life here--nothing safe about it, but as you so aptly put it, there are those at home who need to eat. This is a true love poem in its work clothes! Thanks for posting.

This gives a strong image of the setting by the sea. You include all kinds of beings.
I like learning about new names of watercraft. This tells us how dangerous fishing can be. But you are right, we all have to eat.

I can't believe I missed this wonderful poem when you posted it, and am so very pleased for you that it is in this month's POM contest.
Your sonnet flows like the soft breezes at the shore. Perfect iambics and superb enjambment carry the day. It was so smooth I almost didn't notice line 6's slight metrical dip or are you eliding estuaries into something like estu'ries? Even if there is the pyrrhic in the 3rd foot, I love the art of the line filled with such wonderful visuals.
One of the very daunting things about the heroic sonnet is that it has 9 rhymes in it. And your end rhymes are solid, interesting and in perfect pattern.
A superb poem, Tony. Well done!

I'm woefully late in responding to this very kind review of The Winter Fishing Fleet, Ray, but thank you for it and for the six stars.
I've been fully engaged in being a father and a grandfather for the last two or three weeks, my daughter having unexpectedly returned home from NY because of the death of her best friend here in tragic circumstances.

It's so nice to see traditional form poetry among the POM nominations :) You have a lovely paintint to accompany your heroic sonnet. Another one would imply you write them often. How wonderful to be nominated for a poem you have a natural ability for :)
I can picture the fisherman and the water activity going on in this lovely scene you have word-painted. Excellent iambic pentameter, Good and solid rhymes, nice turn, and nice closing couplet. I thank you for the glossary of terms in your author notes to help out readers like me that need a little help with some of the terminology. I lived on both coasts of Canada yet never learned much about the fishing life. My only claim to fame is that I love to eat lobster lol!

Thanks, Joy. It is an honour to be short-listed for this. My knowledge of fishing is largely from the internet. Indeed, I've always regarded a fishing rod as having a worm at both ends. However, i share your liking for lobster!

You jump right into it with the first eight lines that are so descriptive. Every word counts toward your tale. The remainder of the lines follow as good as the first eight, but switch to the fleet and fishermen themselves. Last couplet reveals the reality of it all. Marilyn

Love the lingo in this, all the "local color," fauna, birds, etc.,
slop-wallow, stuff like that. And true enough of course about the storms and the waves. Strangely, despite being a powerful swimmer, I have a fear of big waves which makes owning an island in a big lake a bit difficult at times. I think the sonnet form's almost invisible in this one. I like that. Looks like The Fleet's preformed well for you.
