I enjoyed your ballad in rhymed quatrains and learning more about your part of the world. I actually did not know Pike was an explorer. Great photograph of the "concrete bridge" and "plaque". Cheers and happy weekend- Joan

Great format for storytelling.

This poem reminds me of Stephen Carter's Americana series. I learned something historical in addition to enjoying the excellent rhyme and good, steady metre.

Thank you Sonali. Yes, he went ahead and published that series as a book. I got a copy.

Hi, Treischel,
"The Bridge to Pike Island" is an excellent ballad with good simple rhyme and rhyme scheme that is consistently followed. The poem has good flow and figurative language "lead to misty isle"," lonely concrete bridge". It celebrates some of the romantic history of our nation's west ward movement. I appreciate the History lesson.
Your friend and colleague,
Preston

Treischel, interesting poem that tells a story ... a history lesson for
us. I enjoy visiting those kind of places and reading about what
happened all those years ago. Well done.

The ballsd format is of course ideal recounting a history which is of course what the ballads originally and now you have taken up that particular cudgel and gives another fascinating insight into a piece of your local history.

Thanks for sharing the story of Pike and his discoveries and influences on the birth of your fair cities. Your love on your area comes shining through in this poem, Tom. You have a lovely way of making your home more real to me. My great-great grandmother pioneered and settled in Minnesota. Her family lived on both sides of the border. Some in Manitoba, and some in Minnesota. I've written some stories about her granddaughter, Maud, who was Canadian. Her parents died from the flu one horrible winter and she was adopted by her uncle Hamlet's family, who were Minnesotans.
Great touches of history in this charming poetic.
Rose.

This is really cool. I like anything of historical value or that tells stories of history. Ohhhh... even if it's just old, I like it! hahahahahaha I'm weird that way. This was a fun story in a poem. Great job!

I liked the historical facts you skilfully outlined in your poem. It would go well in one of the books about your town to add to the other collection of poems you wrote about your home. Well done, Tom.

A fine photo of a landmark, and some interesting history in rhyming quatrains. Sounds like you'd sing it to "Ghost Riders." Excellent post.

This is a really interesting poem coupled with your authors notes. It's nice to read that Zebulon Pike actually bought the land from the Indian chiefs, and didn't just took it like so many others. When you write about the Mississippi and surrounding areas, I can imagine all the things that happened there. I always wanted to come there and travel on the boats we see in films and in pictures. I don't know if they still have them, but I see Tom Sawyer, and so much more from the stories I used to read as a child. It was always a dream like place, and suddenly I can say I know some one who lives there, and it all becomes real. And that is through your poetry, Tom. Excellent as always. xsx Sandra

Thank you Sandra. Yes, Mark Twain was in and wrote about Tom and Huck from Hanibal Missouri, that is just down of here, not a long drive. Or down river. Glad you enjoyed my poem.
