I did make me stare at it for a while to decipher those strange objects!
Also, the poem pretty much described what I felt, thought looking at the image!

Thank you Sandra. Yeah, I wish there had been a plaque or sign nearby explaining it a bit. Being a small town, there was likely an article about it in the local paper.

I thought they were birds nests. I have smaller versions in my trees. They were made by Hummingbirds.Can you imagine how small a hummingbirds eggs and chicks are?
About the so called sonnet. I don't think they should call it a sonnet. What's the point of that? Give it it's own name. LOL Nancy

Yes, I can quite see why you would feel some sense of fear, looking at them, I thought they were wasps nest, large ones! What a good idea, though, to decorate the trees that way while they are bare of leaves. Do these objects perhaps have connections with Native American art like dream catchers or are they just the products of the basketworkers' "heat oppressed brain"?

I found the poem delightful in that old world way that goes with "doth" and I knew you would opt for Dante, the father of the reformation rather than Hopkins.

There is a medieval ballad entitled Robin Hood and the Curtal Friar. Curtal is given in some references as a friar who acted as a porter at the gate of the monastery. This is dubious since friars were itinerant and didn't live in monasteries. most references involve shortening, the curtal friar would be one wearing a short gown, which makes sense for an itinerant, so yes this is most likely to be a curtailed sonnet. Shortened by four lines.

Your feminine endings in LL7 & 10 give it a great touch of class.

Thank you Pantygynt. I saw those references to the Friars as I researched the form. I believe the baskets are the latter heat oppressed brain,nalthough I agree they do convey a dream catcher aspect. I looked around for some plaque explaining them, but found none. I am pleased you enjoyed it. By the way, I could make no sense of Hopkins' meter by either its description, or by reading his three poems. I was also strongly biased by Dante's aabbba rhymed sestet, with those triple sequenced b rhymes.
