Like your other essays that you have written you know how to grab the attention of your readers. I agree with your latest essay about fear. Well done on this article.

You can dream a dream to to make it come true? wishful thinking here. A really great write on the subject, we have feed, built schools and hospitals none of that seems to work. they only understand aggression. If that's what they want that's what they will get. peace on.

    Thanks, William.

I have to disagree with your comment that they only understand aggression. Everybody understands that - it only results in aggression being returned. That's why this problem will never be solved - you can't wage war against an ideology.

feeding and building schools and hospitals don't work, we can be as nice as gold, That's not the problem. It don't work in this country among handing out welfare either, sorry to disagree with you.
reply by the author on 04-Mar-2016
That's OK - you are entitled to disagree. You missed out the most important part of the equation - stop bloody killing them!

Welfare is an entirely different argument.

A article fit for the commentary section of any newspaper liberal or conservative. If it does nothing else (which I think is your true purpose for writing this was) is to encourage dialogue. You place the reader on side or the other. The hope, of course is find a middle ground to bridge the two together. Loren

Keeping on doing what we've always done sure isn't working!

Thank you so much for writing this. I agree with every word of it, and have long felt that way. But, I believe you didn't extend your argument quite far enough. It is not enough to deliver beneficence in convoys of lorries to utterly destroyed towns and villages. Many of the people in need have already fled. We all need, as you say, to stop all expenditure on weapons of any sort, and use the money to unite the first and third worlds evenly across the whole globe, for every refugee that wants that to happen. Properly shared, there is plenty of room in this world for everyone to live and make squalor and fighting a dim memory.

I particularly agree with your comparison of Trump with Hitler: they even use the same style of rhetoric.

Thank you for the most sympathetic response and the six stars.

I agree that it's too late in many cases, but stopping the killing is a good start towards some kind of future. I fear the world will tear itself to pieces if this madness goes on for much longer.

'Every time you kill an innocent civilian, or even a confirmed fighter, you create a new generation of hate - family, friends, villagers, tribesmen, colleagues - all rally to the cause. ' No, really? This simple logic seems to be beyond the grasp of most people.

An enjoyable essay, with some humour, duly noted. You are right to say that terrorism begets terror. ISIS don't have to do a thing, now, really. They've got us right where they want us. Running around, flapping our hands. All they'd need to do now is set up a rumour about biological warare development, and that's the West won.

Good write, though I suspect it's ruffled the odd feather.

Thanks, Emma. The odd thing is that perhaps they don't seem to realise how rattled they have us. I can think of half a dozen ways (like your biological warfare development) in which they could easily ratchet up the terror at almost no risk to themselves...

Steve,
I enjoyed this... well said, well written, only a few place which might need additional commas (posted below), all in all, great job.

"America is the Great Satan! We must attack them."

"But we haven't had our food parcels this week - let's wait till after that..."

(so true... don't bite the hand that feeds you)

Secondly(,) there is something that seems glaringly obvious to me, but apparently is beyond the limited comprehension of most politicians(,) and all military big-wigs.

Every time you kill an innocent civilian, or even a confirmed fighter, you create a new generation of hate - family, friends, villagers, tribesmen, colleagues - all rally to the cause. (this is so true)

How can we not see that we have not weakened the enemy? We have strengthened him.
(so true... and either country could stop... we are heading for the next WW) :(

Sack a few of the war-gamers sitting at their consoles in the States, targeting the smart missiles and destroying lives at the click of a mouse. Replace them with logistics experts who can organise the supply and delivery of goods, engineers who can rebuild roads and cities and shattered infrastructure, and doctors and teachers and counsellors and farmers and, and, and.......

Let the killing stop. let the healing begin.

I completely agree with this well-written prose piece, and yeah, it won't happen right away, hey, it might NEVER happen... but at least we DID something, and it wasn't filled with hate. Right?

So sad...
well written Steve, i'm all for this... naive or not, it's the RIGHT thing to do.
Karma has a way of coming round. ;)

Thanks for sharing, can I write you in on our ballot? ;)

Thanks for the great review and the sympathetic ear.

You know what? It wouldn't matter if your new President did want to stop the fighting. He has no chance against the ingrained political system and the big business interests that sway so much of what gives birth to policy over there.

Scary times, and the only answer we seem to have is to kill someone. You can't kill an ideology with guns and bombs - you need a better ideology.

Hide. That's my new ideology. And if that doesn't work. Hide is my #2 plan.

You make a good case. I see no errors. Too bad the politicians won't get elected if they go for it (#!#!# hippie socialists, LOL).
Yah. Current politics make me embarrassed to be an American, but at least I've never voted Republican (the party of Trump, the two Bushes, and Reagan.) Sad. I thought Reagan was an embarrassment, then the morons elected W, (the last Bush) twice(well, once, Gore won the popular vote, and probably really the actual election in 2000 - if we'd been a third world country it would have been called a coupe.)
But Trump isn't playing on fear as much as he is just plain whipping up the crazies, who are so full of hate and racism... They pretty much lost their minds when a black guy got elected president (never mind that he's 50 percent white).... And the Republicans, who are basically just plain screw the earth I have a business to run greedy, have been sucking up to these people (anti-abortionist/religious fundamentalists/racists/dumb as dirt willfully ignorant) for a long time, counting on their votes while looking down their noses at them, never dreaming that they would end up taking over the party. Well, it serves them right, but not the rest of the world. Maybe a Trump candidacy will scare the rest of us into getting off our butts and voting! I sure hope so!
Will let you go. Thanks for your patience!

Kathleen, thanks for the thoughtful response. OK, add in the crazies to the fearful - but where the heck do you get so many crazies from?!

Your comments about sucking up to these people reminds me of a post in my facebook feed this morning - something about the Republicans sowing dragon's teeth and now being amazed that they've grown an actual dragon!

    Freaking oath! (Dragon)
I think the crazies have been multiplying for quite a while. They don't believe in abortion, remember. Rupert Murdoch's Fox"News" has been brainwashing people via TV for at least thirty years. And many are Southerners still clinging to Civil War bitterness. And more are just plain ignorant and Donald Trump amuses them. We never thought Reagan had a chance. We'll see about Trump.

Steve, I didn't expect being moved to tears by your piece! The solution you recommended seems perfectly sound to me. Also, this message of universal peace and love is so close to my heart! While ANYONE lives in survival mode, they are capable of ANYTHING. It's so true. All of us - this is hard wired into our brain.
Get someone out of that - offer the basics and possibly some emotional healing as well, and big changes will happen.
There's one little thing I am missing from this essay - which is only a bit if extension of a thought already present: if you added that stopping the killing, thus the military expenses, also allows the government to support one's own citizens despite of supporting the overseas people in need. Many many Americans would argue that you shouldn't support others before taking care of your own - well, without the war expenses, we could do both...
I only mentioned this because this argument comes up over and over again, and I am certain that this is the response (unfortunately) of many readers.

Thank you for the deep thoughts, and global thinking. We need more of that!

Thanks, Jyoti, for such a supportive review.

Actually, fewer people than you might think have brought up the 'charity begins at home' argument - perhaps because those most who might have thought that didn't bother to respond to my trivial piece of nonsense.

You are right, that is a logical extension of my argument - I had plenty more to say, but didn't want to ramble on for too long. I am contemplating a follow-up piece....

You mean these people are prepared to wok hard, all hours, to make a living and support their families? What a quaint concept! You can tell that they will never integrate into western society!

As I said, just a dream.... but if I ruled the world...

What an excellent piece.
Wouldn't it be wonderful?
Our youth is the place to start because once they are brainwashed, they will fight to the death to be right.
No problems noted and an excellent piece
