Thanks. I think most moms would risk their lives for their children. Mom did what she had to do in the situation.

Amazing, especially considering the revelation at the end that your mom had a fear of heights. Isn't it funny, how it doesn't really occur to us until adulthood how truly amazing our parents really were? Loved your heroic tale. Mom's really are so quietly heroic, so very fitting that this lovely piece won the contest. Thanks for sharing.

Thank you. I never knew mom had a fear of heights until much later. Mom and I were talking about the incident and she told me how scared she was that day. She did what she had to do.

It is amazing what mothers are capable of doing when necessary. It's good you recognize your mother as one of the unsung heroes who step up for their children without thought to themselves. You tell this story and a very compelling way.

Aww, that is so sweet. You're right, a mother's love can overcome many obstacles, even her own fear of heights.

On the other part, it's funny how you mention the jealousy for the new baby. As I was the baby of the family, I never had that feeling. In fact, I always wanted a baby brother as all I had was one older sister. I'm pretty sure if I had gotten one, I would have felt much the same as you did.

Another aside, mom was doing well to climb up and get you down having recently given birth. You go, mom!

Thanks. It bothered me when my younger brother was born. I was the spoiled baby and it hurt my feelings to have another baby take my place. I got over it and learned to love my brother. There was another baby girl born after him which made twelve of us. The reason iIwas so spoield is because I was a girl after four boys.

Wow, now that's a big family! All I have is me and my sister! I always wanted a big family.

This story was very well written. A mother's love surpasses any fear on the face of the earth, which is why she was ble to climb that ladder and rescue you. You did great job describing this scenario! Thank you for sharing.

WOW! What a mum ... a real Hero for sure. Your story is written with the charm of a youngster too big for he own boots. lol Sounds just like the sort of adventure I'd be up for. I was always worrying my mother ... though heights were my thing, and I had very good balance fortunately. I find no spag and was thoroughly entertained. Not only was your topic choice number one, so was the style of your writing. Flowed well, fun, entertaining and exciting. I can imagine many a reader who could identify in one way or another with your story. We love our mums and most of us were lucky to have one who would be prepared to do such things for their children. Apart from her fear of heights, I can imagine how worried she must have been that you might fall. Though it sounds to me like you would have held onto that beam forever. LOL

A wonderful and delightful story. Definitely a worthy winner. Congratulations. Well done. Hugs - Lovi xoxoox

Thanks. You're right, I had a death grip on that beam and mother had to pry my fingers loose. It's funny how some memories stay with us forever. I was only four but I remember that day as if it was yesterday. Thank you for your wonderful comment on my work. I love to write about my childhood years; they were magical.

Thank you for your offering. You've got a great conversational way of writing. I followed everything without stopping. I was smiling at several points. The baby, the cats, the hay bales, the descriptions all rung true to how a child would have seen them versus an adult looking backwards.

Your mother sounds really neat. This is a nice way to talk about someone important to you. Thank you.

The heroic act of your mother to rescue you from such a dangerous situation is incredible. It raised the adrenaline level further on reading the last lines that she had acrophobia - an euphemism for fear of heights. On hindsight, one could say the experience was a blessing in disguise for both. She got rid of her fear and you had the unforgettable memory of her being the hero in your life.

Thank you. I don't think my mother ever got over her fear of heights, she just did what she had to do at the time. Mothers will do amazing feats to save their children.

Dear Writer,

A tense and frightening story about a small child's foolishness and a mother's courage and love for the child.

This could be improved by eliminating ly words and was. It needs to be more active too. Here is a suggested edit for this section:

Mom gave an exasperated shake of her head and started up the ladder. She put one leg over the beam and inched her way to me. She pried my fingers loose and pulled me up against her so she could slide backward to the ladder.

I don't know how she got us both down without falling, but I didn't help whatsoever. It must have been difficult to get a hysterical child down that ladder. One slip could have meant severe injury or even death. My mother became my hero that long ago day.

I hope this helps.

Warm regards,

Winslow

I love this! Did you and your mom ever talk about it after it happened? I bet she didn't punish you because she knew the fear you had up there would be enough to keep you away from it for awhile. Great job with this and it was great learning about your hero :)

Thanks. Yep, we talked about it when I was older. No, she didn't punish me, she just calmed me down and told me not to do it again. There wasn't any danger of me climbing up there again; at least, not for a few years.
