As I was reading this, before I got to the author notes, I was thinking it should be set to some country music. Great lyrics. I'm sure it will make a great song. I just wish I could hear the melody of music.

Hi there---funny thing for me ---your poem or shoukd I say words for a song came up while I was reviewing. I KNEW NOTHING ABOUT YOU, NOR WAS I AWARE OF YOUR VERY HIGH RANKING POSITIONS AS AUTHOR, NOVELIST, ETC. Having majored in English, I had a list of suggestions because I felt you had "great potential."
Now I find out you've got your potential down to a "gnats ass." lol ENVY ENVY

Nicely written song here. It follows the country theme well. I have started playing guitar a little, still learning. What chords do you have if I may ask. Have a blessed week. God bless.

Yes, the men's tonic for a broken heart, sad to say is the alcohol. I am just curious why do men seek refuge in the bottle even at the slightest trouble. But of course, heartaches are far worse than losing your job or your pet. So roll down all the barrels of beer and drown the sorrows. LOL. Sorry for this little "pun". Thanks for sharing, I enjoyed reading your poem. God bless.

This would make an awesome country song. Love the refrain: " if drinking will kill me I ain't got far to go." All you need now is some music. Great title too. Superbly written. Les

Maybe the gal dumped him because he's an alcoholic? Drowning his sorrows isn't going to help. This is a familiar country song theme, but I wish sometimes the guy would get a backbone, tell himself the gal isn't worth it and get on with his life. I guess that wouldn't make a great song, though. Excellent wording for this, and it would make an excellent mournful country song. Happy trails. judi

You ask how many have been there, done that. Probably far too many. Ireland has a real problem with binge drinking, especially among the young. And, like your poem shows, drinking can kill. Sad, but true :)

I used to work for a man who always said at the end o the work day, "Well son I need to gargle my throat with FourRoses, care to join me? and of course I never accepted his invitation.

Thank you for sharing more of your lyrics and adding the reinforcing artwork. I liked your drawing a parallel between love and an unsatisfying "shot". I particularly admired your repeats and rhymes along with your phrase "you told me so". Cheers- Joan

This rhyme would fit well (in song) with what my drinking buddies might say beer drinking music. A lost love. I quit drinking alcoholic beverages when I was 21. Although, there is a little humor in the poem, especially the theme "If drinking going to kill me I have not far to go." My dad died at 49 years old the drinking destroyed his liver. I enjoyed the free verse and the story.
