I have often thought that the survivors of great wars do not the the recognition they deserve. The fallen are recorded forever on the memorials and in books of remembrance but those who survived were just as brave, took the same risks and just happened to draw a different card from the pack, so ensuring that once the natural span of their lives was complete their contribution would most likely be forgotten. You have fgone some way here to redress that balance.

Thank you Pantygynt. Yes, it is amazing how some survive and others don't , who may be inches apart. Call it luck, or fate. I know that Billy was often an advance scout, so he did not duck danger. In fact, my dad told me that he often thought Billy had a death wish.

The ones with the death wish are often the survivors.

I take my hat off to Uncle Billy,Treischel. So many brave lost their lives in the quest for freedom, yet today, so many continue in the quest for hate and greed.
Well done.
Good write.
Have a great day.

You are the master of so many strict writing forms.
You match them with the theme as is your purpose
and the read flows through with confidence like we
wrote it ourselves. Well, this one is a great tribute
to your uncle and the family who loved and respected
him for the great countryman he was. Thank you for
reminding of those who served and survived war
times.

Excellent photo of your uncle's grave stone. You do so well and give him honour with this poem in Trijan refrain form. He landed in France and helped to free people from Hitler's hands. Well done by this uncle of you.

What a wonderful honor and gift. Your uncle sounds like the kind of man I would loved to have been able to sit in a room with for a while! I know your family will be happy to hear this!

Thank you Robyn. He was a very interesting fellow. Somewhat of a daredevil in his youth.

There were many unsung heroes that day, brave men who risked their lives so we would be able to live freely. I think your uncle was a brave man, who stood beside hundreds, thousands of brave men. We owe them a debt we can never repay. Excellent tribute to your Uncle Billy, Tom. :) Sandra

Great tribute to a dear uncle and war veteran. He went through all the danger, not even got wounded and live until 85 a very tough guy and your pride shows. Good picture.

Gee, he and my son share the same birthday. Boy, I'll bet he had stories to tell! The bravest of the brave...I shudder to think where/what we'd be today if it hadn't been for them.

Hello again, Mr. Reischel! Thanks for introducing us to your uncle and another new form (for me, anyway). The shape of each stanza looks a bit like a tombstone and I liked the echoing repeats and your rhymes. Here's to the greatest generation! -Joan
