well this unbiased stranger thinks not only was that a flash of brilliance, but this piece is just as cute as it can be. Enjoyed the whole thing. Have you ever thought of writing a book about you and your wife - with neat insights like that and semi- caustic comments, humor? and congratulations on your ranking.

Thank you! I am thinking about writing such a book and as soon as I am back on my feet from being hit over the head with a shovel after telling her about it, I will begin. I remain at present mildly confused and keep thinking of people who enjoy eating fleshy, pulpy fruit as the best kind of reviewers...:) Dennis

well, Dennis, true confession here, too - chuckle, chuckle - can't help laughing. I was poking fun at the word poem, but as you figgered out I did have it before I read your piece. However, now you have educated me - taught me a new word - and I kinda like that - I can use my moniker with either meaning!
    PL or PL :)

This is delightful, and so well told! In this piece, you take real life and make it entertaining and a piece many people will be able to relate to. I can't think of a thing I would suggest you change. Best of luck in the contest.

Oh my goodness! This had me chuckling all through the read.
Some choice funny lines. But the ultimate was when you spotted toenail #10 in her hair. It took me at least 10 years to "train" my husband to clip his toenails either outside or over a garbage bin.

I enjoyed your sense of humor in this wonderful little story.

I loved the sweet and simple nature to this. I could see an old man thinking while pretending not to. I had to laugh at the toenail part. My husband leaves his freshly cut toenails on the bathroom counter. I couldn't tell you why. Irritates me to no end. But like wife in this story, I do love the man. LOL. Great story and good luck in the contest. You got my vote.

Thank you so much...it's an honor to be nominated and I thank you for voting for my story. I am a bit puzzled however...the man is leaving his toenails in a place where you can easily take care of throwing them away. Why would you be irritated at this thoughtful act on his part? :)

Spoken like a true gentleman. I will have to rethink my anger. Thanks for straightening me out.

This is a delightful tale. I do however have one question. Where else can a man chew on his toenails?

Fifty years together, that is a fantastic achievement. And one, I fear that won't be all that common in future generations.

I know had I posed that question to my wife, she would have run to the window, opened it and then pushed me. Then she would have called it an accident.

Congratulations on the write and on the right attitude to marriage

Yours is a rhetorical question I can tell...and there may have been days when she would have encouraged an expedition to the roof...but one can get too much reality at times:) thank you so much for reading and commenting, very much appreciated. Dennis

I love the narrator and I love his wife of many years - sounds like a few of the couples I know from church - a couple of them have been married 65 years and more. Not so much with the public displays of affection, but lots of little ways of being with each other that make me smile.
I absolutely love the humor in the ongoing toenail discussion
and his wondering over all these years if she actually loves him :-) This is a totally charming story, my first six of the week :-) Brooke

I enjoyed this lifestyle story very much, it really showed true experiences that I, as an older person in a long term marriage, could familiarise myself with.

You write so well.

Thank you for sharing this with me.

This is wonderful and sweet. You describe well their relationship, their questions, their doubts. You have fun details like "After I vacuumed (9 out of 10 toenails is not bad for a guy)." And I like how the removal of the tenth toenail from the woman's hair is a gesture of love. You have a great voice and talent. Thank you for sharing.

Hello Deniz - I had a good laugh at your piece. It was so entertaining. I would hate to be cooped up with anyone for a length of time, unable to get out. The toenail episode was funny, I can relate to that one with my hubby....of course they love each other....the ups and downs of married life can relieve the boredom at times. The tale kept my interest.

What delightful characters you create here! The persona's underlying insecurity about his wife's love is tempered by comic relief of the recurring toenail plot line. The fact that #10 lodges undetected in her hair is hilarious.

You use the winter season well to create a context for the man's uncertainty to be resolved. You portray your characters believably and interestingly with outstanding description and dialogue and a plot line that enables the reader to know them quite well in the confines of such a short piece. Very good.

These characters be us and we are living this as I type. :) So glad you liked it and appreciate your taking time to read and comment. PS; I'm not as "nice" as this guy and she's better than I depicted. Dennis
