I enjoyed your story of a summer to remember spent with your brother Patricia. That was a lot of weight to gain over 13 weeks! You must have changed a lot and did some growing up during that time. Your fond memories are still with you after all these years so that you could share this experience with us, much enjoyed and how different a country upbringing is to someone like me who lived in suburbia, love Dolly x

I love childhood stories with independent traveling and experiences. And you are right. Today is impossible to leave your kids alone because you are called a bad and irresponsible parent. Thank you for sharing

Patricia,

I had no idea you were so good at writing prose! Why have you kept this so well hidden all these years? *smile* You should have been sharing a lot more prose with us all along.

I'm so happy to hear about this wonderful summer. I can't begin to imagine how helpful you were!

Some notes:
1.) "(no space)You are going to swim, or you will have to get out of the water.(")

2.) The pitchfork landed to(o) close to me and one of the tongs of the fork punctured my leg.
--> how horrible! I don't care if you had threatened his LIFE - there is no cause for anyone to throw a pitchfork anywhere near another person. RUDE! (And fairly stupid, if I may say.)

Thanks! I enjoyed!

thank you for letting me read your saga. I like the idea of Minnesota, Missouri and other towns which you talk about. Kind of close to home. Good luck with your story.

Guess, too, your brother & his wife, really liked their sweets....I learned to get a sweet tooth, too, & unfortunately to this day, as my mom always bought or baked a lot, too, cakes &,especially Christmas cookies.
Yes, quite a trip, indeed for an 11 yr old to travel alone, even then, & how things sure have changed.....Really enjoyed your story, Pat & its good you have compiled so much....There is a lot in my childhood that was suppressed, my memories, though enjoy reading about others.....Thanks so much, I loved reading about your babysitting adventure & how you felt as a preteen.....Thanks, for sharing, Pat.

Thanks you for the review. That was the most wonderful of my troubled childhood and is one of the memories I didn't lose when I was 19 Thank God for that.

Dear pateclaw,
I am really enjoying reading your life stories. I can picture myself there in Minnesota by your descriptions. I would like to see you expand on the accident with the pitch fork. Did the boy do it on purpose? Did you go to the ER or have to get stitches? Did you have a "puppy love" crush on him? Just being nosy! Keep up the good writing. Cheers! Barb @ theskysthelimit

Thanks for the review. I do not have more recall of the pitchfork incident than in the story. You see when I was 19 I had an incident that wiped out almost all of my previous memories and it has been by the grace of God I have gotten back what I now have of those years. So if my stories of my childhood are kind of sketchy, I hope you will understand. Later in my book you will find out what happened that wiped out the memories.

    Dear pateclaw,
Sorry, I didn't mean to bring up anything painful. I can vicariously understand your loss of memory. My nephew had a brain tumor removed when he was 10 and has had two other brain surgeries since then. He has no memory of his childhood, either, so we relate what we remember of his childhood to him. I enjoy your stories. Keep 'em coming! Cheers! Barb @ thesysthelimit

Itt is no problem. Itis kind of funny in a way, I hhave memory recall of most of the real bad things that happened but the good memories were those that were lost. I still have a four month period when I was 19 that I have no recall of,

I forgot that you have a twin brother. The photo complements this chapter very well. It must have been an excellent summer as you liked looking after the kids.

    Thanks for the review.
The photo is of the Minnie HA Ha Waterfalls.

I don't remember a lot of the details of that summer, but the pots and pans and Steve is vivid in my memory. The desserts, the lake, the waterfalls and the pitchfork are all vivid in my mind.

Hi Patricia, you certainly had a good time here. Well, except for the swimming and the pitchfork maybe. How awful was that man to throw a pitchfork at you. Can't imagine anyone doing that no matter how much a pest... you may have been. Sounds like such a beautiful place with the lakes and the waterfalls. You have such a wonderful memory of these things in your life. Really enjoyed reading this. Genya

Tat summer was a great time in my life and a very fond memory. The young man didn't mean to hit me with the pitchfork, and he felt really badly about it happening.

I really like this chapter. It sounded like a wonderful time for you, except for swimming and pitchforks. I am amazed at all the things you can remember. I hope your family is getting a copy of this. I smiled at the way you gained weight. I remember my folks putting me on a bus to go see my sister. It was 430 miles away. I was about 10 at the time. I recall a woman trying to steal my bus ticket out of my back pocket when she thought I was asleep. I leaned back and I sat on her hand and she did not try it again.

Thanks for the kind review. A lot of my memories were taken from me for years when my mother did what she did to me when I was 19, but God has been so good to give me back the memories. I am however missing some months in 1957. July to early November.
It sounds like we both have a little something in common a long bus ride as quite young kids.
