Hi Ingrid,
can I just say, that man-made laws and man-made religion goes all the way back... and it seems to have bred down through the times.. No matter how our world is wired... there will always be these men that need to believe in their superiority through a dominant reaction for who they should be protecting and nurturing... it's easy prey... in what world does rape, kidnap, bashing, mental and physical torture stand as an excepted behavior of a man?... no time, no year, no circumstance or excuse could this type of behavior be permitted and yet here we are, day after day witnessing these atrocities... men that think the world revolves around their twisted beliefs.

I hang my head in shame to this archaic indoctrination where law is a mockery and religion follows like a lost little lamb... where self appointed Messiahs turn a blind eye to the despicable treatment of what they encourage through their non-action.

I know there a few cultures where the women wail and mourn a death... our indigenous women do... this practice should be taken up by every man on earth who owns a conscious... we should all be crying for what we allow to continuously occur... be it in our own backyard or not... and the only way these things occur is by putting pressure on our inept politicians... the more countries that pull support and refuse to play ball with the offending countries, instead of rewarding them with free trade all because these countries have something we want or need... money over life will never be an option in my mind... now this is just a reaction from what you wrote, but women are being abused on a daily basis on every continent on earth no matter how far we think we've come and I do know how hard you, and others like you, fought for women's rights... but that's just not enough in my books... it times like this I am ashamed to call myself a man, or even have the same genetic make-up... I can see myself going round and round chasing my tail so I'll stop it here... bur know this, I am so proud of you for standing up and writing such a 'in your face' essay... get it out to as many media outlets as you can, and I hope others will do the same... then, and only then will tyranny know we, as human beings want justice... and we won't stop until we receive it.

A brilliant read and I for one will never tire of reading articles such as this.

With our thoughts we create,
strategies for change,
James xx

You're right, James, it will never change. there will always be men that seek power and domination, but it is never earned power, the grit of true leadership, but brute force. How can they ever enjoy a victory by killing the smaller and weaker. But if you listen to the issues, this was a retaliation of one caste against another and killing their women was a message to the men.

Thanks for suffering the ugliness in this read.

If it wasn't for social media and technology, I do not believe these instances would be publicized here or anywhere else. If its not a political issue it rarely bears repetition.

You are absolutely right about had it not being for tv most probably wouldn't know about the girls being abducted but let me throw this out there. We have homeless people here, we have unemployment, we have troops out, we have people going hungry, when I was raped nothing was done, etc. We help so many other countries and I get that they are worse than us, I'm not trying to belittle that at all but when we have our own stuff to deal with and instead of helping us you send our money elsewhere. I feel that they need to take care of us citizens before they start to help other countries, money or support in general. I would have like to see justice when my rape was found out about but it didn't happen here either. My word against his and I read in the paper, there was a huge article about it in the paper today, about how most of the time when something is reported nothing is done. I won't lie it made me feel slightly better knowing I wasn't the only one not heard/listened to/believed. It sucks, it really does. I hope all those girls are found safe and that one day no matter where you live you will be able to love and marry who you want when you want and it won't be a huge deal. Maybe one day, maybe one day

When did your rape occur? It was exactly that way thirty years ago--no witness, no evidence and complete futility, leaving the girl sullied, broken and with life-long scars. My deepest empathy.

I do not have the answers to your frustration, but for all the patriotism and flag waving there is massive poverty in NA that is not addressed. Ignoring global issues won't repair domestic problems, and quite honestly, it is my belief that it's the money--all about the money. Countries are no longer self-sufficient and sending aid is as much about back-door trade as it is about any humanitarian reasons.

My rape happened for many, many years. I didn't tell right away so obviously it didn't happen, right? In the end he had the better name and won out

Your passion is astounding. This is yet another essay that should be submitted somewhere beyond this site. So strong. Nail meet hammer.

A while ago, someone reviewed one of my posts and made a comment about the brutality of those medieval times, and how women were treated so badly.

I didn't say it, but I thought it - it's only in the last three or four decades that women in our holier-than-thou western society have been given a respectful place. And, you of all people, know how we've had to fight for that. We've still a ways to go.

What to do with these Pakistanis and Syrians and Indians? Well, personally, I'd like to chain them up, hack off their dicks and feed them to the stray dogs.

It must be said, that in this country of mixed races, it goes on as well.

Bastards.

Shit, you've got me going now.

Send this post somewhere. A newspaper. Put it on a blog somewhere.

Great write.

On Tuesday, I'm going to send this and another two or three pieces out. What is it the Guelph Record? If you know who the editor is let me know or I'll look it up, but plan to ask for freelance work, not 'letter to the editor.' I know they put at least one piece of mine in that slot but asked me to edit it down to 300 words. I complied, but shit, it was so lame after I hacked it apart. Thanks for the stars.

The Mercury in Guelph. Hamilton Spectator. Kitchener Record.

You might need to take 'fuck' out of it, but otherwise...

reply by the author on 01-Jun-2014
Expected to do that. Should I do multiple submissions or one at a time?
reply by Cumbrianlass on 01-Jun-2014
Since you're freelance, I don't see why you can't do multiples.

Unfortunately, in the lands where Moslems are terrorising Christians, the government is uncivilised in its approach to such injustices. Maybe, we have to threaten to cut off their aid to make them comply. India is a democracy and has a more civilised form of government with a predominantly Hindu population, so some headway can be made there. At least it is no longer as transparent as it was due to social media. Very well written commentary with excellent use of language. Enjoyable read. Faye

Thanks. Yet despite hundreds of years of colonial influence and a democracy that has made some headway, public rapes are still a fact of life in India.

Yes, money talks and while it may not be able to change the nature of men, it can greatly influence the accountability and expectation of justice as leverage.

An excellent piece that highlighted the plight of women worldwide. It is subject that I feel passionately about, but unfortunately some countries still class women as mans play toys.If a man got raped with a pipe and hung out to dry by a gang of women, all hell would break loose. While men rule these countries nothing will be done. But if women ruled then yes we would get somewhere.Stay Focused,God bless

A few women have rules, but most have little or no education and it will take fifty or more years for females to get the foundation to rule. Most don't have a say in their own homes and are ill equipped to lead anyone--yet. thanks for reading. and your very generous star.

Ingrid, I share your outrage. Keep in mind that, in the US, it did not become a crime for a man to beat his wife until the 1990s. We're not so far ahead of the rest of the world that we can afford to ignore what's happening. But if you expect men to care...you're a good deal less cynical than I. :} Nancy

I make a point of talking about domestic abuse in North America for that very point, to show that in some ways we are not so far ahead of countries that turn a blind eye honour killings and stonings. Cows are valued more than women.

But I disagree that men will not stand up for these crimes. There has been an enlightenment here in the last fifty years and a whole new generation of men have evolved never knowing that women were second class citizens in their own country.

Further, women have tremendous strength at the pols, if bot the podium, and we as a noisy group can force change and action.

Thanks for the stars, greatly appreciated.

A very upsetting read, What torture theses your girls suffered and for what. Your well written story is saying what most decent humans beings would say. Yet how can thees men believe it is OK to treat women in this horrendous way. The Genital mutilation is a crime in itself, yet this is still considered OK to inflict this lifetime pain and suffering on innocent young girls. I agree with you that doing something to try to make these countries aware of the unnecessary heinous acts carried out on women, is just not acceptable. I believe education in the schools to young girls and BOYS to change the idea that this deplorable situation HAS TO BE CHANGED.

Well done, well written, I applaud you for writing this important piece

It needs to be upsetting--it's too easy to turn off the TV and discard the images in our not-so-perfect world, but one in which NA women can feel safe in.

Women here can make a difference and help by being very noisy and pushing our leaders to take a public stand. Too easy to concentrate on elections, let's demand that our representatives DO something. Thanks for the stars.

My question exactly--why can't they flood the compound with smoke or tear gas and rescue the girls. I suspect that they Nigerian forces that have located the girls will sit around the compound roasting marshmellows until the world turns to other issues, then quietly go back to other things.

Thanks for the bouquet of stars.

I do hope this is published and soon. Not that this isn't something that has been going on for a very long time, but because the sooner the chance of making a difference, the more lives might be spared.

Do I need to say anything about the actual writing, or is standing up for the content enough - you say it with strength and conviction for all of us - you say it brilliantly.

I just sat down and wrote it today, but several people have suggested that the strength to carry forward ad I think I'll send it to a few national newspapers. the problem with that is that they treat everything as an unsolicited letter and direct it to the 'letters to the editor section' for which this is too long, but I'll give it a whirl.

I just heard that they're letting the woman in Sudan out of jail. I imagine the noise we created as a society went a long way towards that decision by virtue of our noise. Keep screaming and thanks for reading.
