This is a very creative and interesting poem. It was my first time to encounter Sappho and I have to google search about her and what made her interesting is her poetry which centers on passion and love for various people and both sexes. In addition, I was able to encounter the origin of the world Lesbian. Great!

The pattern of the pantoum gives tempo to the poetry and the lines seem to have the dynamics of loud/soft - fast/slow - I believe it comes across as a musical chant. I really enjoyed the poem being a dedication to Sappho ;)- I had exceptional Philosophy teachers - one, my friend and mentor, Leo Sweeney, S.J. -
The early Greek philosophers were Ionians and it's said Homer belonged to this world. It is significant that the greatest poet of Greece and the beginnings of systemic philosophy are of Ionian genius.
Members of Plato's Academy worshiped the Muses. I enjoy your author notes - always a learning experience. And, of course this your most recent poem is a delight.

This is a beautiful pantoum poem dedicated by the author to the poet Sappho. Written in iambic tetrameter with good rhythm and rhyming throughout the poem. We have lost so much of the literature and other contributions of the Greeks due to various wars that took place.

Oh my dear friend, you posted it! just got back from a two day's trip to Eastern Long Island, and saw your poem. What a masterpiece; divine beauty, Sappho herself would be proud of you. A very good choice of the artwork. The pantoum is flawlesslessly executed, with a lot of lyrical lines. The visuals are so good, I can see the Pluto and Sappho, his muse, aboard that "silent silver ship." You took us centuries back in time, and I loved the journey.
Favorite lines:
Cruel Eros made it hard for me
To sing my soul's eternal tune
He set my heart adrift at sea
My lyric voice beseeched the moon
To sing my soul's eternal tune
With notes of tidal lunacy
My lyric voice beseeched the moon
Will Sappho ever join with me

Thanks, Yelena, firstly for the idea and secondly for your kind review and stars! I had one or two false starts and a bit of background research to do before selecting a subject. I chose Sappho partly because I think that history has mistreated her somewhat and partly because so much of her poetry has either been lost or destroyed. Once I got going the poem began to write itself to some extent. The ideas flowed smoothly as they sometimes do. Nice when that happens! Often it doesn't!

Since joining this site quite recently I have found quite a bit of inspiration from the support of its community. It has all the advantages of a writers' group without the inconvenience of having to turn out on a cold winter's night!

It's not a subject I know much about, but that made it all the more intriguing. I must read more about this compelling woman.
Very natural rhymes, beautifully incorporated, and some fine enjambement, making the repeated lines sound fresh. The way you have completed the circle in the final four lines is superb. Did you start from that and work backwards, I wonder?
This is a fine example of the pantoum. I wonder if there is room for another on the Poetry Dances page?

Thank you too for drawing my attention to the Poetry Dances page which, being fairly new to this site, I had not really looked at before. I have just written another pantoum in which the pantoum explains itself. A whimsical definition in verse! I'm just waiting to amass sufficient wealth in members' cents to launch it! The first and last lines of a pantoum are fairly critical to its success, I think! In this case the line came first and I built the rest of the poem around it.
