Very well written poem . The opal is my birthstone and I absolutely love it. So magical it seems. I have a few different types as well. Thanks so much for the education behind the gem as well. Wow, that truly would be something to see. Thanks for sharing your view with us.

So long ago I wrote that poem; glad you enjoyed. Australia is well known for opals and we are the birthplace of the black opal. Thanks for reading. Cheers, K.

Thank you for the beautiful poem AND the Author Notes that are so informative. The opal used to be one of my favorites of precious stones. In my latter years I neither own or wear jewelry.

Greetings Jean, Thank you for reading my little poem; opals are so beautiful - have a fire of their own. I don't wear jewellery now either. Still, we can both appreciate beauty that is millions of years old. Blessings - Kay.

Yep, I'm another lover of opals but don't own one. Nice to look at. They always make me think of the time I went on a treasure hunt for thunder eggs; a lucky dip, at best, and exciting to discover what's inside when cut open. The stunning colours in the crystals, in return, make me think of opals. Really enjoyed the creative, visual reveal of how and why. Risky business for beauty, eh? You captured it. Cheers, mate. Alyx.

Hi Down on the south coast - thanks for reading, glad you liked the story. Opal relates to the Third Eye (chakras) and apparently is used for clear sight. Cheers, Kay.

This was so cool to learn about. I have never heard of a fire opal. The stone in the picture is beautiful. I am glad the people live underground. I hate it when the temp gets to 101. As I read I did wonder, is opal mining dangerous like coal mining?

Hi Carolyn, Opal mining is very dangerous - dynamite is used! Thanks so much for your great review and six sheriff stars! LOL. XX K.

Hi K,

When I was in Australia we went to an opal shop where they showed a movie about them plus many to choose from. I bought earrings and a bracelet. They are among my prized possessions. This is another poem written with skill, excellent rhyming pattern, an easy flow and superb theme. Well done...blessings, chey

Hello Happy Gardener! Thanks so much for reading; opals need to be worn - they are show offs with their beautiful colors. Glad You liked the poem - next one is about opals but I am still working on it. Cheers, K.

Just read your author's notes - that sounds horrific to get that hot!!
good use of abab rhyming
I like the alliterative grouping of M words in the first stanza
and more good alliteration follows in later stanzas along with vivid detail of setting
opportune as a shortened form of opportunity is a bit of a stretch
you definitely convey the harsh working conditions and the wealth to be had in opal mining
I never knew anything about this before and it is fascinating :-) Brooke

Oh, goodie! I have been asked to write about Lightening Ridge - and so many folk love my stories. I can't write a great deal because my arthritis is chronic and getting worse. Thanks so much Brooke, I know you are a busy girl. Kay XXX

I enjoyed your poem about the opals and the miners
in Australia. My mother loved Opals and actually visited
some mines there, so this was a very interesting write and
I especially enjoyed your author notes. Thanks for sharing.

You've got my favorite stone in the whole wide world Aussie! I grew up on stories about Lightning Ridge but I've never been there! (Born in Brisbane). What a delightful bush verse to spin us a yarn about these gorgeous stones and the touch men and families who mine them!
