You are good at these sad ones, Bill. I suspect this poor man is so filled with pain, he's taken his gun with his into the mist. Skipper will stay with Mama. So sad. I think as I age I'm understanding things like this more. I will not be a burden on anyone. I don't have a gun, but I do have a good supply of pills. No, not yet. :)) Sandra xxx

I wife probably has pills saved up for me. We have a running gag where someone, sometimes my children, throws a laundry basket down the steps to the basement and yells, "Oops! Dad fell down the steps!"

Your children obviously take after you, Bill! LOL!! You'd best not fall down the stairs now, they will think it's the joke being played and leave you down there!!!

I enjoyed your short piece because of the subtle message. And everyone will say he died doing what he loved - and be comforted. I love the scene you set up and I thought the ending was grand. Good luck with your entry. Giddy

What a sad one. Your story is complete--giving the reader enough in few words to surmise the outcome. Poignant. And, as always, with suicide, one wonders what they are doing emotionally to the ones they love. Good work.

This is a moving, compassionate piece about a dog and his master. It took me three goes at the first bit of dialogue, but then I got what was being said. I'll have to brush up on my Scottish accent a wee bit, lass.

well done

This is very good--well written. I had to read through it a couple times to be sure it said what I thought it did. Very poignant and touching. Good job and luck with the contest.

i'm not a poet so sometimes i miss the meaning of a poem...does this mean the old man is going off to kill himself,,,or he's leaving the animal because he's getting into things he shouldn't. I'll learn given enough time, God loves you and so do i.

This is actually a short short story. It's known as flash fiction. This one can only have one hundred words in it, so I had to include a lot of story by way of hints to the untold part. The plot is basically a older man with a terminal, painful illness who decides to take the boat out with his shotgun and end it all. Thank you for reviewing.

What a sad sad scene as this man in pain prepares to sail off to kill himself. How poignant that he makes the dog stay on the dock as he knows his soon-to-be-widow will be needing the dog after she learns of his death. A most compelling story in only 100 words Brooke
