I loved it! I loved I loved it! It's been a long time since I've enjoyed a short story as much as this one. You manage to pull the reader into the story early on in the story and keep him/her there. I loved the rusty gate giving the teenagers such a fright once we learn a ghost opened it.
Well done on a good story in the nether world.

Yes, and there is quite a tradition of Christmas stories, too. Do we have Dickens to thank for that, or was he following tradition as well?
I wondered why you didn't give the older officer a name in the beginning.
The story is well put together, and all the pieces fit.
