Congrats on winning this contest, Sharyn. needless to say, it is a great story of tenderness and love between a grandpa and his granddaughter.
Their conversation is so full of charm and sincerity. The fact that the fairy tale came true was a great surprise because we would have thought the clever grandpa would be the 'fairy' doing his bit to make the fairy come alive - but that would not have a been a good ending and ethically wrong.
The conclusion in the story was the best. Let us all believe that fairies exist (even if only in our minds). Great work or art.
I will going into the woods tonight and look for a silver fern, if I get one, I will belief. Even if I didn't...well. I would say I missed the boat, LOL.
So the fairy does exist and I am actually the male fairy here (wondering if a male fairy exist?). If you find a silver fern tonight, it meant that they exist. If you didn't - well you, like me, missed the sinking boat! RTFLOL.
Cheerio, Ritchie.

Well bless you for catching up with this one Ritchie! and thx for the congrats. This was actually inspired by my own grandfather who was actually rather grumpy - but he did tell me about fairy ferns, so I have him to thank for SOMETHING. That was sweet of you to read it for no dollars! :)))))

    Hi Sharyn,

This was a very tender story. Now I understand the Fairy Tooth story (thanks to you..this is the first hand one I have heard, so is a 'hoot' and 'press button' - maybe you can tell me more lingo which you are very good at, ROTFL!). Sometimes life is not about the dollars and sense, LOL. Or for the Ranking (now you know why I am dropping in the ladder ranking).
I wouldn't want to miss this long story (longest I have read in this site). Looks like you can speak very well at age six, haha. Our children of six here may not be that good a speaker. But the expression of that girl was very genuine and cute with her repeating words.
    Cheerio, Ritchie.

Amazing story. A very tender story that brought tears to my eyes. The best of the story was the narrative. The conversation at times was a little stiff, at other times quite gentle.

"Aloha" Freda - and a huge "mahalo" to you for your lovely six! I'm so glad you enjoyed my story. Any particular areas of dialogue you found too stiff? :)Sharyn

What a beautiful heart-warming story. The narration is so realistic and casual, I could easily picturize the entire scenario between the grandfather and Janie. Congrats on a well-deserving win.

This is a very touching story. I love the interaction you painted between an elderly grandfather and a small six year old girl. This is a lovely bedtime story for children.
Well done, you deserved to win with this well written story. Nancy

Sharyn, this is the first chance i had to read this marvelous story. I have a little grand daughter like Janie, just two years older. The same loveliness, inquisitiveness, joy of living as your Janie. She is visiting us this Xmas, I will save it and read it for her, her name is Jessica.

Wow! this is only the third short story I've ever written! I'm more a "script" writer when it comes to prose, so this piece was pure experiment for me - and writing in the third person?? totally an adventure. I'm absolutely delighted. Thank you so much, FanStory community, for encouraging me to try something new!
Blessings and "mahalo" (Hawaiian for "thank you")

Grandfather gave Janie a great gift. The gift of believing. It all started with his dear wife. She late him believing was okay. Grandfather became a man his son could be proud of. Believing is the key. Then open your heart to love and you find it in the most unusual places. Great work.

Oh Sharyn, this is completely magical, in every sense of the word. What a fantastic selection there is in Story of the Month this time. I just read Emsey's piece, which I see was inspired by yours, and that had me in tears as well. I am going to take another day or so to decide who to vote for, but it will be one of you two, that's for definite.
What a wonderful grandfather you have created. I felt quite wistful wishing I had had a figure like that in my life, or that my own father could have had that kind of relationship with my children. You must be a remarkable observer of people.
I raced through this as if I were binge eating, just wanting to know what happened next. I certainly didn't notice any spag.
A wonderful mix of dialogue, characterisation, mystery, poignancy, fantasy, humour. It's all there in spades.
Very, very well done, and thank you so much for the pleasure I got from reading this.

Sally, I'm so glad you caught this one ... I'm new to short story writing in 3rd person, so this was a bit of an experiment -but happily, it seems to have worked and I'm delighted. Thank you somuch for taking the time to read & review, and thank you MORE for your lovely six! And yes, I was so glad to inspire emsey, because she's been having a dry spell lately - and I love her writing! :) Sharyn

Another fantastic story Sharyn. So beautifully written. These stories are worthy of a cosy afternoon snuggled on the sofa, a glass of mulled wine to one side and peace and quiet the only intrusion to a wonderful read. I really enjoyed this. Thank you. Tony

Wow, Tony! thank you so much, my friend! I penned this one as a spontaneous write today, sitting up on the cliff over Honolua Bay while my son was surfing. I'm so very glad you enjoyed it and am totally honored with your special '6'!

JJ, told me to come by and read your piece. I owe her one. This was inspired writing. I was there in the garden on my tummy watching for fairies in the trees top in the house on the couch in the mind of your characters. This for me was as good a bit of writing as I have had the pleasure to read. I was totally engrossed this was absolutely a joy to read. The visual quality of your writing was scene perfect. Unfortunately as I was so struck by your work if your were looking for a critical review I have nothing to offer. I am an unabashed fan totally and completely. Really a striking piece.
