Handsome photo of your father. It's wonderful to write a humorous bit of family history - for the family tree but to delight readers who enjoy memoirs like thihs. I do and thankyou for a great read.

Thanks, Elly. Dad was the most eligible bachelor in a small town.
A lot of angry women when he married my mother.

What a heart warming slice of your wonderful childhood, Shari. I think I've fallen in love with your father, lol. The joke at the end was the cherry on the Sunday. Very nice! Hugs, Lou

It's easy to see where you get your quick wit. You grew up with a father who taught you to think that way. Out of the box thinking comes by example and a large genetic predisposition. LOL

By the way, your dad was a fox. How did you handle your drooling girlfriends?

Clearly written, clever and fun.

Told my friends, he was taken. All the available women hated my mother. No kidding!

Did his looks pass down to your children? They say it skips a generation. Your grandkids will look like you. LOL
reply by the author on 01-Mar-2012
Yes, his looks passed down to my son, for sure. And my daughter is attractive. Don't see where my grandkids look like any one in the family! THey both seem to after my son's wife and her mom and dad.

Maybe it passed through the female gene, mother to children.
Lucky son grandpa's looks and I hope his mom's good sense and wit.

There's been a lot of reminiscing lately around FS. Peter@ Poole has unearthed a bunch of old photos and been writing about them almost daily. I'm loving it all. This was so charming. It's fun to learn more about you through your upbringing. Your dad sounds like so much fun, Shari. Very well written with economy of wording and a heart beating throughout the piece to memories' rhythms. (I have a piece about my dad in my port. called "Dancing With Dad")

Cute, funny, lame. I bet the kids adored him and it embarrased your mother. LOL! But hey, what woman wouldn't forgive him anything, looking like that?
You've penned a touching tribute to a fun guy. I can see why you might have adored your dad. My father was much the same. We used to say that Dad held court at K-Mart. He'd run into friends there and he'd end up gathering a circle of people who laughed at his jokes. Such fun!
Nice job, s. I enjoyed the read.

It is funny how we look at our parents as "Mom or Dad"- not as if mom is beautiful, men are asking her to elope with them, or Dad is so handsome other women are trying to break up his marriage- then when they are dead and you look at their picture, you are amazed at how beautiful or handsome they are. I loved your story.

Thanks, my friend. You're so right about this. Students commented to me on how handsome he was. I never thought about it.

MOVIE STAR! Wow Shari! geez... What a fun childhood you had? I bet your Dad could have been a star had he gone that route. The magical fruit was one I heard from my dad too. It must have been 'the thing' back then? Fun, enjoyable post Shari! Thank you for sharing this! :o)) Susan

Thanks, Sue. Glad you enjoyed. The singles ladies in town were quite angry when he married my mom. Cross off the town's most eligible bachelor.

Very handsome and extremely quirky! Reminds me of my father. He'd ask my friends at their first introduction, " Do you live around here or ride a bike?"
or-
"Walk to school or carry your lunch?"
I miss him. Bet you do too.

Enjoyed your well written story extremely much.
Smiling,
J~

Thanks, J. I still use my dad's phrases, especially the "nugget, pugget."

Very interesting story; in fact, it was so interesting, that my kettle of spaghetti darn near overflowed! lol But that's okay, I would have gladly wiped up the water because this story was well worth it. He sounded a lot like my dad. But my dad was always more humerous for others..but that's another story. Thanks for entertaining us with this true story that, in my opinion, was perfect as is. Very well done.

Yeah. Boy that would have been bad if it all got stuck and whatnot because there wasn't enough water..what a mess it could have been! lol

He is quite handsome, I think. This is an amusing story of your witty dad, I like the 'stooped' part, though I find myself too much in a hurry to get the answer of your first 'riddle'...:) Now I know where your wit comes from.

Thanks, Belinda. Dad was a trip for sure. First riddle? The one about the Swede? The Question is --why did he send the letter after he found the handle in the box?
