Ingrid, this is a very special piece. I love the voice you assumed, and I loved your gentle telling of a tragic yet hopeful tale. This may be fiction, but it is also fact.
So well done.

Peace, Lee

In my mind...followed by...was my idea of heaven---redundant?

There, under the moonlight,...

Obscure? Maybe quaint?--more romantic?

Those two changes made all the differance. who knew a simple comma could command such a change in intimacy?

It's my unofficial declaration of a new national holiday and I'd like you to be a charter member. I've declare, in addition to the obvious signifigance of February 14th that it will also be "Give a Bag lady a Rose Day." I'm thinking that a single random kind gesture today, might pierce someone's lonliness. thanks for your generousity. ingrid

What a sad ending! I loved your story but I so expected a happy ending. Not him heading off to the cemetery for a Valentine's date! I mean this in the nicest of ways...meanie

It's wise to remember that not everyone is walking around today waiting for chocolates and forced declarations. Some love exists without tangable proof. Happy Valentine's Day.

NO! I don't like the ending at all. You've just ripped the rug from under my feet and turned things upside down. :-(
This is so painfully well written. Riveting. Sad.

Tiny spag right at the end: I walkrd (walked) toward...

Sad but brilliant. :-(

Repaired the spag, thank you. No one likes sad endings, but sometimes they serve to remind us that for many people who have lost their great 'love of their life' it is a horribly sad and melancholy day. Perhaps you know of one who might benefit from a random act of kindness.

Wow. EXCELLENT characterization. You saved the zinger for the ending. I kept waiting for it, but then thought, "maybe the couple will divorce or something." This was truly bittersweet--a term that even tastes bad rolling off the tongue--trite--but exactly the perfect word to describe this contest entry. Best wishes and good luck. And thank you for sharing this with us.

You've honored them (and their men) well here.

Heartfelt story and wonderful writing! Dealing with a lost love, a person who you shared the smallest things to the most joyous moments of your life with is a very difficult thing to overcome. And this was a very sweet story which shows how true love also lingers on.

Blessings,

this is very well written, spiritual echo, you did a great job writing this valentine story about the man who stuck by his wife's side even in death, it is beautiful and heartfelt, good luck in the contest.

Your story is very touching and I can relate I lost my sister to cancer. The only time I saw tears in her eyes was when she had her hair shaved. Your story has strong emotions describing the pain of losing a loved one. Very believable and good dialogue. Blessings Rita

OMG.....Those last ten or eleven words nearly stopped my heart. I had not expected that to be the ending. This was so beautifully written and I saw nothing that was even near a mistake. It grasped my attention and held on tight for the entire ride! What an exceptional story, thus the six!
