Well-said, Poet. The power of the poet is so often minimalized in America. We forget that poets have incited revolutions, heralded freedom, inspired millions. They've been kidnapped, assassinated, tortured, or simply silenced. Here, they are just ignored, and some would say it's a fate worse than death.
I love your last lines - above all, a poet is human - 'a soul who needs to reach you.' Good luck in the contest. M:)

Hi MacNizzle,
and thank you so much for your insightful and thoughtful review.
Poets can still have an affect on their generation - Benjamin Zephaniah for one. It is just harder to get noticed!!
Thanks again - Cally :)))

exploder of conventions explorer of conventions
But most of all a poet is a soul who needs to reach you. This is absolutely beautiful. I believe you have defined a poet to a T.

Hi WilliamDeen,
and thank you so much for you lovely review.
I did mean "exploder of conventions" - as in blowing them out of the water, starting a revolution, ushering in a new way of thinking... etc etc.
Thanks again - Cally :)
Comment from N.K. Wagner
Forcing the poet outside her element to define herself is diabolical, but she has risen to the challenge. While she has both content and intent in common with the writer of prose, she is bound by mathematical structure and rhyme. Even free verse uses language devices and rhythm to give the poet's words shape. Blank verse? Usually badly written prose disguised as poetry. But I'm a prose writer--what do I know? :D Nancy

Ha! ha! Yes, it is pretty diabolical when you put it like that! But yes, I did at least have a go myself. LOL
Thanks so much for your thoughtful review, Nancy. Much appreciated - Cally :)

Phew ... you have the complete definition of what a poet is. I like it when you say that a poet is the ears, eyes, abd heart of their generation. And more ... :)

I like the way you define the poet. It holds a lot of feeling that is easy for the reader to grasp. I enjoyed reading this very much and wish you well in the contest.

To fairydancer,
A host of emotions that characterizes the mind of a poet.
The feats and success of their works exemplies the dedication they have to remain one.

Fairy dancer. My favorite line:
"But most of all a poet is a soul who needs to reach you. "
You have touched on the essence of what makes poets write. They need to reach you not so you will praise them.. they just want to touch your soul. In this way poets are misunderstood. And I am pretty sure I have read one of your poems. Yeah!

You have captured the soul and defined the poet in a single paragraph. This is so well written and say a lot about poets. Nicely written and good luck in the contest.
