finally my radiologist set me on fire, radiation therapy, five days a week for six weeks, I looked forward to hearing the words, "You're cured." After all, I went through this so I'd be cancer free./Weird! On 6-17-10, I began the first of 37 radiation treatments for prostate cancer. By the end of July, they were finished and I waited. Three months later I asked my doc, "Is it in remission?" His reply, "Hell no, it's gone!" Those were among the greatest words I ever heard.----I'm positive this man supports a colony of vampires./Sounds familiar----I'm sorry you didn't get the same good news I did, but you have given me another question to ask my oncologist, Thanks for that. This piece was one of your best.----Do me a favor? Please cut and paste this in a browser or search bar: http://writingcontest.thenovelette.com/a-subliminal-desire/
If you like the piece vote for me.

I really admire the courage you have. I have seen plenty of close friends and family members move on, but their courage always stands out to me. I hope everything works out in your favor and you do get to live to 115!

You should turn this into a book. Your words are poetic and tangible at the same time. You're a beacon for anyone who's going through the trials and tribulations of the "Big C." You're in my thoughts. My best wishes for your recovery.

Barbara - it sounds like you're doing better. I do know that you have a positive attitude. Your story, just one more, of how the Doc's can be a bit un-sensitive. His story about "100 yrs." old might have been humorous in a different scenario. Always warm regards, Bill

Anyone who has had a brush with cancer should read this. I love that you were able to maintain a sense of humor through the horror. I agree about the colony of vampires. We can't lose a voice like yours so you will make it. Thanks for sharing this.

Barbara, I love the cheek and the attitude you show in this piece. That is what it takes, stare the monster in the eye and tell it where it can get off. You got better things to do! I am so glad you have achieved this stage of your recovery. Do exercise, it is an energy builder and the endorphins are so nice! Even a brisk walk counts. And what is up with your oncologist? Is 100 the highest he can count? Here's to living to 115 and beyond!

take care, Barbara

A very excellent work to read. I'm still sorry that you have to fight cancer. But let me bring out my somewhat annoying optimistic side and say this: every tough experience you go through makes for better writing and an adventure to tell about.
Your oncologist is kind of weird. I'm glad you want to live to 115, but I'll be happy with the 71 years God promised me.
Keep writing stories and fighting cancer!

P.S. June 17 was an interesting and hopeful day for me, too.

Did you mean to write 150 hours?? Or was that a typo, and "minutes" is what you were after? Anyway Barbara.
It's good to get the update and I did think his retort:
""I can't answer that question. It doesn't work that way with cancer. If you die at 100 from a heart attack, you were cured of cancer. If you die at 100 from cancer, you were in remission." was smart-aleky and I loved your follow-up to that in your next paragraph. I would have felt and thought the same AND had the ice cream too. Sorry there isn't more security that it's finally over BUT I'm so glad to read you're on the other side of all the hideous treatments. Take care and have a splendid, ice cream filled, summer

You are too funny. LOL Still laughing and telling jokes and poking fun. Once I asked my doctor how long will most likely live. I had heart by-passes. He said"What do I look like, a Swami? I have no towel around my head." Funny thing he is pakistanian and did look like he could use a towel. I kept laughing. You have a good attitude. I worked at a cancer center and they generally told breast cancers pts that aftere a 5 year span with no cancer, it probably will not come back?
Woman went to support groups, cause many of them wondered about every little bump, sore, infection or food source would bring it back. It helped them to talk together.
