I remember reading about these pilots and I thought they were just incredible. Makes you wonder why they waited so long to give them those medals. This is a great story.

Thanks for reading the story and for your kind review and comments, Tellis. There were lots of procedure and paperwork snafus that required some change in procedure to allow them to be awarded the Medal of Honor (had to do with their already receiving medals for the Ia Drang battle)
    Thanks!

A great story, well told. When you are a soldier, politics really doesn't mean crap. What you do is take care of yourself and your brothers. Let other people sort the rest out. I was drafted as well. My time wasn't as bad as yours. Regards, Bill

Thank you so much, Bill, for this wonderful rating and review. The story of Ia Drang has captivated me since I read the book,"We Were Soldiers Once...and Young". I wrote this story in the first person to make it more personal and hopefully more believable. The battle and the pilot's stories are real, but the soldier was created by my imagination. Thank you for your comments and I'm glad the story moved you. Thank you!

author, I'm giving you one of my rare sixes for two reasons. One, because this is a very well written, moving, easy to read and follow, true account of one of America's boo-boos. And two, for your part in this "conflict". Thank you for just keeping on.

Our war in Iraq will probably be looked at the same way. Any war is horrible, but some wars, like 'Nam and Iraq are even worse. Pointless.

Thank you for your service, pat

Thank you so much for writing this account and reminding us about that terrible battlefield. It is a bit of history that needs to be remembered. Your vivid words riveted me to the end. The dialog is very real. A great read and again, thank you for sharing this story. Peace, JP

I can hardly see to write this review. If I were writing on paper it would have soggy splotches all over it! What an emotionally charged, wonderful story of heroism. Bless those two helicopter pilots, and you for writing this tribute to them. We all need to be reminded of what others have given up for us.
I wonder why it took so long for Freeman, and especially, Crandall to get their medals?
The writing itself, I cannot fault. Well done, and Good Luck!

Maxine, your heart-felt comments and emotional review are appreciated more than you know. There were lots of procedure and paperwork snafus that required some change in procedure to allow them to be awarded the Medal of Honor (had to do with their already receiving medals for the Ia Drang battle), but I'm so glad they recieved them. Crandall is still alive, but Freeman died in 2008. There were so many heroic stories during the battle of Ia Drang Valley ... I'm glad you enjoyed this one. Thanks!

Excellent story. There is a lesson learned in every step of life. We all need a hero and your hero is one of the best of all.

A suggestion - and then shot him.Ambushed by... I believe a space is needed before the sentence that starts Ambushed by...

Good luck on your contest entry.

Well done. This was not only a well written piece, but a heartfelt and touching story. So often does society overlook it's vets, especially the Nam vets and it's a shame. I'm only 24 and have never served in the military and obviously wasn't around for Nam, but I do appreciate your service and all others like you. Thank you for serving and for sharing your story.

You have told your story well. I always wonder what I would do in a situation like that. It was a interesting read from beginning to end.

The man started out as a boy and ended up a soldier. The story captures the ugliness and horror of war. It shows that the heroes are created in hell and are lucky to have survived.

Gripping story. You put me there and made me feel I was with the soldier.
I like how the mother hugged the breathe out of her son. I could feel that.
