This is a wonderful short story about a family Christmas dinner. We were luck that we didn't have a constant whiner like you did, even though we had eight children at ours.
I like the way you tell it from your childhood persona's point of view.
Congrats on winning the contest
Keep writing and stay healthy

Another 1st! Just like the Christmas you finally got to go home to. What a glorious day that you describe here. Such sweet memories we have of past
Christmas Days. How blessed we are to have that special time each year, over and over. I love it.

    I have two questions.
    1. Do you have a cellar?
    2. Do you still have your Roy Rogers
    watch?
    LOL Ralf

Love this. Had to read something of yours. I can ditto so much of the 1948 Christmas. I didn't like fruitcake either. You can write and would love to meet you sometime. Old writers have lots in common.

I do not have very much of my work on here. The one I like the best got low reviews, so I pulled it. Poetry is so in the eyes of the beholder and behold this one as great. Guess I need to take another look at it. I guess the one that has done best is "Newborn". I'm trying to promote a short story called "To Hell with Cleaning Toilets." Has good reviews by the few who have read it.

You did a masterful job with this one! The tone is just right for a child and the picture painted is crystal clear. No wonder it was a contest winner. Happy New Year. ann

I miss these days, too! It seems families don't get together at least not like that! When my Grandmother and one of my Great-Grandmother was still alive and I was young we'd go to one of their houses almost every weekend! I really enjoyed your poem! sandra

You have captured the point of view and rendered it very faithfully, with perfectly selected wording and focus. Very well done. I can certainly see why this one was a contest winner. It is nice to see that one of the really good ones actually won a contest here.

I noticed one thing you might want to consider changing. It won't damage the child's mindset/focus at all to make this change. It is the word, mincemeat, which is one word like fruitcake, rather than two.

I look forward to reading more of your work. Thanks for posting this one.

You are very welcome. And thanks for the welcome aboard. I was born in 1948, which fact is what first attracted me to your piece. I was a bit too young that year to later remember anything about that Christmas. But I do remember the radio being the focal point in my grandparents' living room. It was one of those large upright wooden cabinet types. I wish I had it today.

Thanks for signing on as a fan. I don't know how much longer I will be here at FanStory, but I welcome your impressions of the pieces I have posted to date.

I guess it is because there are a lot of problems with the site. When you continually see voting skewed by friendship rather than being devoted to evaluation of the pieces in question, and a system built around how much money you spend rather than the quality of the writing, then the glint seems to dim a bit. I have seen some clearly inferior writing win in competition against clearly superior entries, and I'm not talking about anything I wrote. It is more than a little discouraging. And when you have to pay them for the privilege of looking at that level of injustice, the answer seems to fall clearly into the category of "just say no." But I'll be here for a little while longer.

I love baked squash!

:)

This is a charming write, which certainly sounds like the voice and perspective of a child. Good detail depicting the both the external scene and the interior landscape of your emotions and attitudes in that long ago time.

I can see why it won the contest. Really sees "THOUGH THE EYES OF A CHILD"

Nice artwork choice. LOL

No nits or spags.

Warmly, rd

Hello again Bob and that was so delightful and true to form for so many household on holidays. Made me a little hungry as it took me back to childhood. Great post!
Thank you again for using my photo, I am honored. He is my grandson, Dawson.
Happy New Year!

bob, (okay ... i had a brain fart on the name thing. please forgive me.)
LOL the list is making me hungry. i love rhubard pie. not something i see mentioned much in a story. you know i have never been to a celebration where they serve fruitcake. my cousin used to make it and everyone said it was good. i just never had any. made me smile and giggle. yeah, i love the way you mention stuff like the radio and fibber magee and molly. when satellite dishes first came out in the early 80s they had a channel that had nostalgia type stuff. they would show old black and white educational films from the 20s and 30s. even a few silent films. it was great. i wish that channel still existed. i know i'd watch it. this is great and it definitely sounds like it is from a child's pov. imagery is excellent.
good luck~
love,
barbara

This is truly a great entry for the contest. I loved the story from a kid's perspective, and enjoyed reading it. Your funny notes - especially the word (Maybe) - explained clearly your last line: "I will, in a little while, Aunt Betty," I say. I wonder why that makes me feel more sicker.

Wish you a very Happy New Year, my friend. (tati, Dec. 28, 2009)
