I really enjoyed this essay on a great Australian who's genius gave him great acclaim but also an unwanted internal tug of war between his own culture and white Australia.

Take care. Nick.

I am really enjoying learning Australian history. There is so much I never knew. I particularly liked reading about Albert because art history is my favorite way to get to know a culture. I am a collage artist and I will begin to look for some of his art work because I feel inspired.

This was a fascinating story about a true genius of art. It is sad how some of the greatest artists were abused by the very people that got rich off their work. Very well told.

hello there aussie.. aussie being a white fella term. were this more focussed on aspects of his life I would have been more impressed than the digs at white australia.. sorry means nuthing just a means to an end yes.. I did find the tribal tradition of sharing everything only rated a small space.. did that have no factor in his living on the edge of a mission? indigineous australia cannot keep blaming da white man for their plight.. they want us to share everything too more education more government expenditure and u can't argue as I've seen the figures and written a paper on it.. anyway enough to say I didn't find it an overly enjoyable read for the barely disguised rant hidden beneath the artist memoire... my thoughts

b well

Da white man (as you put it) were the root of their troubles. I make no apologies - both sides have their faults. The rant as you put it, probably because my lineage has Aboriginal bloodlines; I don't barrack for either side because both are at fault. Except for one point - whites took their land and their dignity in the first place. You are entitled to your opinion. Thanks, Kay.

yes.. 300 hundred, 200 even 100 yr old ancestors, it's the white fella's fault.
it always will be and they'll always be expected to pay

A wonderful story of perserverance and neglect. The paintings are of remarkable brilliance and the colors
are almost dimensional in their richness. easy

A very enjoyable read, I think you brought Namatjira; his live, trials and tribulation, success and recognition to the readers mind, leaving them in no doubt that he was a rare talent indeed and one who was used and abused by the system in place at that time, I love the artwork of his you have displayed here, awesome! Well done!

The white man culture runs afoul of the native culture. Albert paintings suffered from this influence. Very well written with good imagery and descriptive scheme.

'attracted white artists to Hermannsburg[,(.)] [(A)among] the artists to visit the mission were Rex Battarbee and John Gardener.' just a suggestion so the sentence isn't so long.

This was an excellent accounting of this man's life and accomplishments as well as a history lesson. It is so sad that when a people conquer another; they expect the indigenous people to become subjecated and assimilated.. Again, your presentation was well done and an enjoyable read. Lora

the hand outs was so attractive should be - were so
six months of hard labor for buying another adult alcohol - oh, that is just outrageous
What an amazing story this is - part inspirational, part maddening - again, you bring such magnificent stories to my attention - do you read the work of a poet on site called Lora? She writes beautifully of Native Americans and the passing of their culture - you two should be reading each other's stuff if you are not already. Brooke
