Stacey is struggling to keep it together. It seems from reading before I remember there was a few possibilities that the police didn't check out. I'm curious how that's coming.

Well, the reader can see that the mother is "committed" and we get a clear understanding that her possible condition makes it difficult for to let things go and move on. So, we know now why she will aggressively fight for her son, regardless of all reason or sensibilities.
