I meant to review this some time ago, but something got in the way. John Keats is one of my favourite poets and a book of his collected works was the first that I bought with my own money. A fine red kidskin edition that cost me a small fortune. 12/6d, if I remember correctly! I still have it. LOL
I had to look up Google for details about his statue and to find out which sonnet was engraved. A bright star indeed, though sadly a brief one! I had forgotten his connection with Guys Hospital.
I used to have Ode to a Nightingale by heart, but like many things these days, I can now only recall fragments by rote. The Pot of Basil was always one of my favourites.
Your beautifully phrased poem brings back the tragedy of his short life
and captures something of his essence. I wish I still had a six for it.

Thanks for the excellent review and your perspective on the piece. I studied Keats in a romantic poetry class in college and still read his poems today. Bright Star, Ode To Autumn, Ode to a Nightinggale and Song of Myself are some of my favorite all time poems. But this poem is really about our perception of his life, and the reality of it, which is quite a contrast. John and Fanny were a couple in the romantic circle, and they lived their lives in their poetry, what they couldn't live in real life, which is a tragedy in some ways, I think. estory

Thanks so much for the prompt to read John Keats work, it's such a shame he was lost at such a young age, but leave behind a legacy in the writing world! And to think poor Fanny never remarried her bond remained so strong that's an amazing story. Your tribute poem is beautiful, I'll ne sure to look up his work, thanks for sharing!
Best Wishes
Nicki

Thanks for the excellent review and your words in support of the theme here. It would be great if I could get some Fanstorians to read his work, which shaped poetry in the nineteenth century. And they lived a sad tale. A truly romantic life. estory

What an awesome tribute to John and Fanny. Your respect and love for their contributions to the art of poetry really shines through. You've captured the fact that people can produce everlasting beauty even through a life that didn't last long. God bless, Daniel

Keats was a wonderful poet who could touch people's hearts with his words. This honor you have made for him is quite good. His life is a bittersweet story.

Thanks for the excellent review and I can't believe you never heard of one of the true greats of poetry. Had he lived, who knows where poetry would have gone. Read Bright Star, Ode to a Grecian Urn, Ode to Autumn and Song of Myself. estory

Hello estory,
A marvelous in memoriam for John Keats, one of the master poets.
I consider Keats the most gifted poet of the last two to three centuries.
Your free verse captures a piece of the spirit of the man who's statue
stands quiet, but who's words touch eternity.
"Tender is the night" written by Keats, but thought of as the title of Fitzgerald's novel.
So much beauty is a short 25 years, imagine what might have been,
but relish what is.
Adonais is dead, but his words live.
Best wishes.
Robert

Thanks for the excellent review and I concur with your assessment. He was truly one of the all time greats, and who knows how far poetry would have gone had he lived. Some of his stuff was groundbreaking, others just masterpieces. The last lines of your review kind of capture what my poem is about; the life versus the poetry. estory

There are so many poets who died impoverished and not knowing how future generations would read in awe the words they wrote. John Keats wrote some beautiful romantic poems, yet his life was taken from him before he and his wife could really make a life of their own. I thought this tribute was fabulous, estory, and loved author's notes as well. Very well done!! :)) Sandra xx

Thanks for the excellent review and your perspective on the piece. I think you got what I was trying to get across here, the tragedy of their lives, contrasting with the timelessness of their poetry that still resonates today. estory
