I've received emails from "publishers" promising the moon (for the low, low, price of...)
The sad thing is you were trying to do your due diligence, looking up these people and verifying their names were, in fact, associated with the companies they asserted they worked for!
It's not just writers... though we seem to be easy marks, as what writer doesn't dream of being discovered?
I was scammed by a famous computer security company (or so I thought until my accounts were cleaned out)--
Who would suspect their computer security!?
Sad to say I got back a mere fraction of what I lost.
I'm praying you recoup it all!
A new scam pops up every day.
Thank you for reminding us not to trust anyone without triple checking their legitimacy!

oh my Karenina, I'm angry and sad that you had to go through such a thing also wtf. It's the loss of money that's the scary thing Fortunately I have a IRA or some other letters I don't know from where I used to work and so I was able to take that out it was for my retirement Well that's what I'm doing retiring and getting effed up. bwaaa

This is a pandemic of finances, especially, it seems for senior citizens~
Those of us who can least afford it.
Scammers are so adept as hiding their true identifies and location.
They know the things we (or I) do not--how to disguise their URL address, how to bounce emails from various servers, etc.
In my case all the legal minds could not locate them ~ and if they had? They said most likely they would have moved on.
I'm still praying you are triumphant in getting your finances returned!

Thanks for doing this. I takes a lot of humility and courage to confess being scammed and you're also helping us to be wary as people do impersonate online for lots of reasons - especially to get money from us!

Thanks for doing this. I takes a lot of humility and courage to confess being scammed and you're also helping us to be wary as people do impersonate online for lots of reasons - especially to get money from us!

Liz, I am so very sorry to hear this. From time to time, this topic-- publishing--comes up in the Forum. There are people on FS who have actually published books. A suggestion going forward ... check out the profiles of popular members and see if they have any published books.
What happened to you was not only a scam, but it was cruel. You learned a lesson the hard way. These scammers know our hot buttons. Once again, I am so very sorry, and I do hope that you get your money back, and maybe the credit card companies, etc. might actually find them and prosecute them. Liz, what you wrote today was not only helpful but an eye-opener. Criminals are everywhere. This also serves as a good reminder that we should be careful about what we divulge so openly here on FS. Well done, albeit a heartbreaker. Xo. Margaret

The minute they talk about me having to pay them I say goodbye. Any legitimate publisher pays you for your book rights. You don't pay them to publish. There are ways to self-publish like ebooks and a few other ways, that have been lucrative for friends of mine. They paid the initial printing of the book and handled the sales but the profit was all theirs. The ebooks especially made them the most money. Do research on places like You Tube and Tik Tok. Plenty of new authors are on those sites and willing to help show you what they did to get published. Keep believing in your writing and you will get there. I wish you the best of luck.
