What a wonderful poem about family. Family can bring goodness to the table, but life is not always full of happy surroundings. My thoughts are with you this holiday.

Those were all great images and excellent word choices, but I'm glad you also added notes for those with inferior brains like myself. Holidays are always difficult for me, because my parents died before and after Christmas and my wife passed away a month after our anniversary, New Year's Eve. But, God is still in control and never fails me.

I'm so sorry to hear that. Many people do tend to suffer in silence at a "joyous" time when the expected narrative is that everyone is blissfully happy.

If I didn't have The Lord, I of all men would be in deep trouble!

I like this poem. I like the three stanza structure. Each stanza is a different experience of Christmas. I don't normally like free verse, but I like that this poem doesn't extole the marketed version of Christmas. True love doesn't just happen during one season of the year. And many have lost loved ones or for some reason no longer have biological family in their lives. I like your definition of family and the introspective look at how differently people experience "family" at Christmas-time.

Thank you so much, It's easy for people to get lost at this time of year if they don't fit the central narrative.

I hope you have good "family"" around you.

A fine poem defining different family units in well rhymed cadence form.
In your notes you write what family is to you -
Family, to me, is simply those we love. Sometimes they are related to us by blood and sometimes by choice.
I couldn't agree with you more. Sometimes those by choice as you write are more family then those by blood.
Cheers to a healthy holiday season...

Coming from a broken home, my family has evolved over the years. I have friends that are like family to me as well. My husband and I are the head of our family now. We have a large one, and extended our family table to many. It's a loving one, I'm glad to say. Beautifully written, and illustrated for the contest.
Sending you my best today as always, and my very best wishes for the upcoming contest.

Well structured and carefully researched and organised. You raise some excellent thoughts and your use of rhyme enhances the overall effect. A great response to the prompt. Good luck.

You ares right... Family is whom we love... As time goes by that changes...
I remember my mother at the age of 85 years... loved her caretaker... My mother had Alzheimer's...She did not recognize me or my sisters...
So, again you are so right!
Really enjoyed this read and wish you the very best of luck in the contest,

Interesting, honest and realistic. Your poem is well crafted and thoughtful, and your notes of explanation (for "palimpsest") were helpful. Sending best wishes for the contest.

Thank you so much, Wendy! I remember stumbling across palimpsest at uni and thinking what a powerful metaphor it is. It's only taken several decades for me to use it! :)

I found this interesting well written poem very informative and I have certainly learned some new words. You have described some different types of families. I wish you good luck with this.
