I would go to this restaurant that now not only offers food but entertainment! Before the dog patrol took over, the seagulls had it made. Nice buildup to introduce the solution.

What a great solution to the problem. Dogs can be trained to do so many useful things, but Seagull Patrol is a new one to me. I've heard Hawaii has a similar issue. Maybe they should adopt the same approach.

Thank you very much. Yes, it could work there too. The dogs must be very well trained regarding not begging for or eating food, and also for toileting issues before and after duty only. Owners also must be trained to know dogs' signals of their needs as well. Thoughtful review. Many thanks.

Thank you for sharing about this wonderful solution! I immediately guessed that seagulls were the "thieves" as they did that on every coast we tried to picnic on. But that's so clever to hire dogs to chase them away!

Yes, we do have the same problem at all our other beaches too. The seagulls are so cheeky and insistent - and fast!

I enjoyed your article very much. I love their seagull patrol idea. This brought to mind two different things. When we were in Greece, eating at an outdoor restaurant, it was disconcerting to have cats and dogs all around us and under the table begging for scraps.
A waitress at a restaurant where we used to eat regularly would have her breakfast at a back table in the back of the room. While she was up and day, waiting on someone, she saw a customer walk by as she was leaving and snatch something off her plate. I always astonished at what PEOPLE will do!

Lol. Oh dear! Yes, it would be disconcerting to see animals begging for food. These ones however, are beautifully trained not to either beg for food or eat scraps if they fall, and somehow their presence is discreet as they do their job. Diners enjoy eating in peace, and the novelty value of the dogs watching out for them.

I so much enjoyed reading about this. It sounds like seagulls are fine food connoisseurs but have yet to hold down a job to pay for it. How fantastic that trained dogs can help people enjoy the meal they started and are paying for. This just went on the list of reasons I'd like to see Australia one day. If I had any sixes left, it would have been worthy of one. Nice share.

Thank you very much Crystie for this lovely review. Very positive and supportive. You would love Australia - the only problem is its distance from everywhere else, and its vastness. Lovely that you thought this story worthy of a six - thank you.

This sounds to me like a typical Australian solution, practical and effective. As your story progressed, I wondered if the solution was going to be similar to that found effective in UK for reducing the number of bird strikes on aircraft around airports. Quite a few airport authorities apparently employ hawks in this capacity.

The set me wondering why hawks can avoid aircraft while their prey can't.

I would imagine that hawks, being bigger, would be victims of bird strikes too. Strange. Thanks so much for reviewing. Always appreciated.

Hello Wendy,
Thanks so much for sharing this. What a genius idea! Those poor dogs, being surrounded by all that great food, I hope that they get something other than kibbles when they aren't working. Seagulls are a real nuisance, as well as crows and ravens, all of which are in abundance down in Hoonah. I once had a raven fly off with a peanut butter sandwich that I had stored under the bow of my skiff. They are so smart and sneaky. Great story gal.
Have a blessed day.
Tom

Yes the seagulls are very cheeky and sneaky, and terrifying for small children, and some adults too. I am sure they get very high quality food - I would hope so as their owners are very well paid!
    Thanks so much for reviewing.

Outrageous! It makes me want to go and grab a hideously overpriced bag of hot chips from the shops at the ferry terminal and share them with these most amusing companions, Wendy. The gulls will always be welcome to share my lunch.

I don't make it to Sydney very often these days, and hadn't heard of the pooch patrol, but I do think it's a clever and fun idea. And I do miss sitting outside one of those lovely little cafes you mentioned, soaking up the sights and the sun.

Congratulations on making me feel homesick, it's a very rare feeling for me these days.

Lovely job, thanks for sharing.

Craig

Thank you Craig. A super review. I rarely go to the city and even more rarely eat at Circular Quay as the prices are outrageous. I always found the seagulls amusing to watch, but little kids are terrified and distressed, and some adults too. Lol.

This is a neat idea. Are dogs trained not to accept food from the diners. I'll bet there are some who might be tempted to slip them a chip when no one is looking. I would see the area. I'm sure everyone recognized the Opera house as being a icon for Sidney.

Thank you Beth for reviewing. Yes, the dogs are trained not to ask for or accept food from diners, and not to need a bathroom break while on duty as well.

I absolutely love this story. I was glad the problem was solved when I read, "These guards are called Seagull Patrol." But when I read they were trained dogs, I shouted out loud, "Great!" What a fabulous idea. Dogs like Sunny who is a volunteer working dog, and the Seagull Patrol dogs demonstrate how valuable they are to humans. Great story.
