It can happen to anyone, and that is the important lesson here. Anyone who thinks s/he would never fall for such a scam is extremely naive. I'm sorry this happened to you, but I'm glad there was a happy ending. Older and wiser, Baby; that's as good as Life gets! xoxo

Elle, I'm more than a little confused here. But thank you so much for the review. I think the end is missing from this one. xos

I have had a lot of scammers write me, text me, call me. I recommend a code word or phrase. Like artichoke something that does not relate to anything about anyone and does not come up in normal conversation. Karen

Thank you so much, Karen! I was refunded in the end by the bank but the beating myself up in the interim was a punishment in itself! Debbie

An ominous foreshadowing: "Unbeknown to me, however, someone else did - a total creep and complete stranger - had been doing a lot of planning, intent on his own" This incident will invite too many to identify. Some of us victims have more than one situation...bwaaa. I'm sure you will get a plethora of stories. Mine could be a whole other post...grrrr

Thank you so much, Liz! I'm amazed you found that one and so sorry there was no payment. It was a horrible experience. I felt so stupid and gullible and probably blamed myself more than him. I was lucky because I had all the money back in the end, some of which must have come from his bank account. My bank informed me that this is so common now and many are working from call centres, operating these scams on an industrial basis. As you say, grrr. Take care Debbie

This is a very good article that, unfortunately, few of us accept can be played on us. I received a scam call today and had the good sense to call my grandson. But a year ago the guy talked to me for two hours, wearing me down to get my bank account. My husband talked me down finally. There are so many ways they come at us and scare us. So glad you wrote this and hopefully you will save others in our group here from the same mistake.

Thank you so much, Carol, for your kind rating and lovely, thoughtful comments which mean so much to me! I don't stop feeling foolish about this because there were so many opportunities when I could have just used some instinct instead of being so blinded. When I rang the bank afterwards of course they used voice technology to confirm my identity. I wonder when this will be used by scammers - if not already - to dupe you on the phone into believing a relative is calling. And how did they know the age and circumstances of my daughter? -it must be all gleaned from social media. Not good! But I'm so glad you found out in time. Thanks again. Debbie

Well quit beating yourself up over this. Your thinking was clouded over as a concerned parent. Hard lesson but you are willing to share it so others are aware of scams.
Your well worded and interesting story is well done.
Best wishes
Mary

The phrase "live and learn" would certainly apply to this situation and hopefully, opened a dialogue with your daughter. What a way to break the ice of whatever disagreement stopped you from calling. It is never easy to tell on ourself for doing things we feel were not pleasant. I hope you get reimbursed and the bank can find this person. The story is well written, has good flow and coherency. When I read things like this about those horrible scammers I get so upset. I had that happen to me, but with the help of the Lord I was able to stop it before any money was given to them. Thank you for sharing this with us all. It's a great reminder to be careful who you are really having a conversation with these days! love and belated happy anniversary!!! Teri

It's a shame that there are people who can think of things to that extreme to scam people. What a wonderfully written essay.

Good luck in the contest!
Have a great day, and God bless.

Good morning, Debbie,
You have done a wonderful service to anyone reading your well-crafted narrative. So unsettling that this kind of behavior exists, and yet, we both know it does on an increasing level.
Your writing flows well, and kept my interest to the very end. (I was hoping for a positive resolution; hoping it comes your way.)

Thank you for sharing!

The "mistakes" you made, in my opinion, are perfectly understandable (up to a point). My mother is bad about this. The grandkids will get money from her all the time, and there is one she doesn't care to talk to, so on the rare occasion that this one contacts her, she will only speak with her through text. Several times, she has had her identity stolen in this manner. When my daughter gets angry with me, and I get a text asking for something, I will pester her to call or answer, because I am determined to fix the rift. My mother says I am "kissing her ass" (excuse the language). Now I can tell her that I am not doing that - I am protecting myself. Thanks for the story.

Thank you so much Monica for your kind rating and for telling your story. I am so pleased that this might help your daughter to understand your position and exactly how much we have to be on our guard. I am still kicking myself and nothing yet heard from the bank :( Take care and thanks again. Debbie
