My husband and I just returned home from a restaurant brunch. I'm stuffed, but this post made me wish I could eat again.

I didn't realize there was a National Grilled Cheese Sandwich Day. Join FanStory and you learn stuff. Thanks for the interesting history and all the delicious sounding recipes. My favorite to try is the Antipasto Grilled Cheese. Yum!

It's better if your able to shred (you're able)

This was a fun and light look at the history of grilled cheese, and how it's become a staple and a gourmet dish. I learned some things about other cultures, which is always a plus. Grilled cheese with tomato soup is absolutely awesome.

Hi John, I haven't had my morning coffee yet, and you are making me hungry as well as making me smile. Grilled cheese is such a comfort food. I don't know anyone who doesn't like it, but I am sure, there is an oddball out there, I have often joked that when I die they will find cheese in the veins of one of my arms, and coffee in the veins of my other arms.

I enjoyed reading your story. Of special note:

The classic American grilled cheese sandwich emerged in the 1920s when inexpensive cheese and affordable sliced bread became available.

(J, how the world has changed. Cheese is no longer inexpensive and neither is bread.)

Also:
Grilled Cheese Hot Dogs, (one of my favorites), hot dog buns, hot dogs, cheddar cheese and sauerkraut.

(I've had a hotdog with the cheese, but never sauerkraut too. I'll have to try it.)

A truly fun and enjoyable story. I would venture to say that grilled cheese is an American as apple pie. I guess that's why some people melt cheese on top of their pie. I've never tried, but who knows, maybe one days I'll try the hotdog with cheese and kraut and have a slice of apple pie with melted cheese. It's also American not to worry about salt, sugar, and fat. I make both the American version and the French version with the cheese and ham. I am mostly French, as I have two French lines in my family ancestry. We love our cheese. Manifique!

Oh, this article has me salivating for a grilled cheese sandwich RIGHT NOW but I have already cleaned my teeth, and I should be in bed by now (it's 1.10 am). If grilling, I put the butter on the outside for really yummy surfaces. I tried dipping ham and cheese sandwiches in beaten egg and milk and frying them; delicious but fell to bits in our hands - we had to pay the dog to clean us up afterwards. Love your recipes; I really don't mind if you give us more. Cheers, Julie Lau.

    Don't know the name. Do you know French toast? I French-toasted them. I think the mistake was too much milk in the mix. The eggs are always delic because we have our own grass-eating hens. Bon appetito.

This is a mouth-watering post. I used to enjoy so much my mother's personal take on cheese on toast when I was young and ill. Toast was made and buttered as usual, whilst the cheese was grated and melted into a beaten egg and milk. It was a delicious soft mix. Excellent for sore tummies. kay

I didn't know such a day existed, John. Thanks for sharing
about it. Who doesn't love grilled cheese? I read a couple
years ago about a place in NYC that specialized in these
sandwiches. That's all they made. Your selections all sounded
great--esp with tomato soup. I've never tried one on the
hot dog buns or with shredded cheese.

Ok, you've succeeded in making me want a grilled cheese sandwich for breakfast. I will call it toast surrounding cheese, with scrambled egg to accompany it. And I won't forget the sliced tomatoes on the side.

What a delight, and yet, pardon me, but my favorite cheese for a grilled cheese sandwich, dare I say, is the processed cheese - Velveeta, which you may not know was named for being a "velvety smooth" edible product, that scientifically would deny it being edible at all.

John, you are a dedicated foodie, and your research and experience shine through your writing in a very positive way. I don't see how you could improve on the writing.

But there are two issues with the content. Mayo? And, of course, being a Texan, I would have to suggest Jalapenos. It becomes a nacho grilled cheese. Excellent work. Terry.
