I agree with this poem. I have always enjoyed teaching first grade. I am sure it's because I could do things silly and first graders loved it. Where adults would question why? Thank you for sharing this with us.

I have always marched to the beat of my own drum. I was too short to wear a Maxie skirt and too modest to wear a short, short, mini skirt. A hem just above the knees was just right for my frame. LOL That made me unique in fashion. I was different in many other ways., but I liked being me. LOL You are so right Jesse. Well done Nancy:)

I've always said that all of my friends are eccentric and those who were not are rather boring. I like your definition much better. It is kinder and does not carry any negative connotations. As for myself, for most of my life I've tried to live within the expectations of others. Finally, in this last chapter of my life I've freed myself of those constraints. This particular line jumped out at me: "And, with each new passing day, they become more of who they are..."

I've always been drawn to people who don't seem to fit the mold of conformity, as well. As you say their personalities are multifaceted and they are more interesting people. Some times they see themselves as misfits, but most of the time they are okay with being thought of as different. Actually all of us are unique, but it is a human tendency to try to be a part of the crowd. We make ourselves less interesting by seeking to blend in the those around us.

There's a lovely Maori word for autism - 'TakiwÄ?tanga'. It means 'in my own time and space. I love this phrase and it perfectly sums up the idea you are presenting here as well.
I always say to people that the only person you have to prove anything to is yourself. be true and honest. (unless you're a serial killer obviously!)
I've worked with children for nearly 30 years who all needed additional help of some kind and this is what we always try to bring out in them. you don't have to fit in to someone else's preconceived notion.
This goes for all walks of life and even here on the site in terms of what we write and conduct ourselves.

It seems social classes and labels are based on pre-judgments and expectations. We ought to practice getting to know people better. Nice post to help remind people not to stick to only a few people who we think we are comfortable around.

Unable to label is an interesting take on the positions that are taken by those out of the norm and considered extreme by their opponents. I know we applaud those who run strongly on the side of our political leanings, however I don't know that we applaud those who run to the opposite of our political leanings. I am just saying.
