I enjoyed reading this, and learnt a new word in the process - caboose. I like that!
I gave it the 4 stars because I'm not sure I would have understood some of the phrases if I was a child, E.G. way beyond his prime, out to pasture. It might have been better categorised as Humour.

I enjoyed reading this, and learnt a new word in the process - caboose. I like that!
I gave it the 4 stars because I'm not sure I would have understood some of the phrases if I was a child, E.G. way beyond his prime, out to pasture. It might have been better categorised as Humour.

Yeah, I'm hoping it isn't too gruesome and sad for a children's poem, but I guess they should learn that not everything has a happy ending.

My pops was a railroader. My best memory was riding the line to P-town on the Delaware in the caboose, another piece of history gone to the grave in modern days. Small wood burning stove within kept me warm and the loft was a place where you could grow to love the countryside more than down below.

I'm glad your kids and grandkids are continuing the tradition of reading and enjoying poetry, too. Your poem reads well in mostly iambic heptameter. But the story is a bit sad for kids especially as you have personified the train so well. Best wishes in the contest!

You're right about the sad ending. It might frighten smaller kids.

It's my preferred style, I like writing in heptameter, which is a form of ballad style in which amazing grace is written in. 8686, abcb in the Heptameter style it's 14 syllables and aabb rhyming, yours has variable meter, and wanders a little from 86 a little, but great job, Jim blessings Roy

Someone else pointed out that "Wile on the Green" was the same way--with an unfortunate ending. I'm normally not such a wet-blanket because I usually like happy endings to things. These two just happened to turn out that way.
