Drinking during the game. I see his alcoholism is becoming more and more a central part of the story. Win or lose, I think for E.J. to hit rock bottom and address it something really bad has to happen. Like... being drunk and running over Abby with his car.
Good one.

Well, I can't promise that, but he will soon hit rock bottom.

Whoa! I really like your "blow-by-blow" account of his playing. I am not a golfer at all. (I think I've played twice.) I was not even aware of high-stakes betting at golf matches. Pool, yes, but golf, no. So the joy comes in having a seat in the golf-cart, so to speak, and watch them from close up as they played. A great chapter, Jim.

Thanks very much, Jay. I'm very happy to see that a non-golfer finds interest in this part of the story.
At the suggestion of several people who have read the entire story previously, I've cut a bunch out of both the golf and bridge scenes to give the story wider appeal. Hopefully, I've struck the right balance.

Well, if this is the cut version, then perhaps. If not, then I would disagree with their appraisal.

Yeah, this is the cut version. During the first two drafts (this is the third), most of the criticism I got from non-golfers was: too much golf that they just skimmed through. Same for the bridge scenes.

It looks like the yips are back, I've played enough competing sport to know that can happen anytime, anyplace, it's a skill within itself to learn that a one-on-one is not that easy, it takes steely resolve to stop from "choking". Well done Jim, great commentary, blessings Roy

Yeah, they think the yips are primarily psychological due to pressure, so it's hard to know if E.J.s are due more to his alcohol addiction or just his poor response to pressure. At any rate, they are proving to be his undoing.
I once had the yips, but it was due to being on Vicodin for 3 months following back surgery. Once I got off the Vicodin, the yips disappeared.

I think it?s mainly a sense of inadequacy in a lot of areas that causes one to drink, fear of failure, defeat, hopelessness which I?ve had in spades, cause the yips. Yep, we all get it to some degree, Jesus is my crutch, (and drug) I don?t need to drink, smoke or compete anymore.

This was a good chapter in which you were able to create tension between these two adversaries on th golf course.
Looking like EJ is taking a turn for the worse. We'll see how it plays out with more then the weather storming.
Excellent. John

I'm a little worried about our friend here. I was hoping he'd win. I can't wait for the next post. This is a good write.
I woke up the next day around 10:00 AM with only a slight headache (the following day - An editor told me it has to deal with the definition of next and following)

This intro chapter for me drew me in when I saw the four-letter word GOLF. It's what I use when I need to cuss.
Where did you keep greens? I worked in a pro shop a small while in Brevard, NC.
Ridgewood Country Club? Isn't that where Caddyshack was supposedly filmed?
Be well.

No, that was Bushwood. I was a greenskeeper in Grand Rapids, Michigan in the late 70s.
Thanks for the good review, Tom. You might like this story--there's a lot of golf in it especially later on when a very unique invention is created. I put out a chapter a day which I promote. I'm 2/3 of the way through the story now.
