Everything you write seems worthy of six stars; I just don't have them to give. You are a true storyteller, always drawing your reader into your adventure. Once again, this is a real winner in my book. Best wishes.

Best wishes, Pen

To take the time to read some of my portfolio really pleases me!!!! Thank you so very much. I read a bit of your profile info and am impressed with your long marriage and family. Since you are closer to 90, I can say 'I am only 79'! lol. Isn't life good and especially so when we can share time and stories, at our time of time, via fanstory? I love talking about old times and new times. thanks for reading and commenting, ann

Loved your choice of "five" items! Actually, I remember the story about those spoons and I think you can put them in your purse and they all count as "one." Lol. And then the urns then can count as two. The ending is sweet because you always know how to find the blessings even in the hard times. Congratulations on your second place finish!

I tried to think of five things that were important to me if I had to choose. It wouldn't be easy, as you say. I think your choices were excellent given what they meant to you, and definitely your parents urns. They would have been on my list if we hadn't spread them together where they wanted. Well done, I enjoyed the way you wrote this, sharing your thoughts as you made your choices. Good luck in the contest. :)) Sandra xx

WOW. Oh, WOW!!! I find myself lost for words -- not a good thing for a writer, but my friend, this was exceptional. Not only technically, but the story, the way you dealt with the topic of the contest. I was riveted!

A very well written story, and I liked the way you permitted the reader to see your thought processes and why you made the choices you did. I liked how you justified your "categories" rather than single items, and how you would use your negotiating skills, which added a touch of humour.
Well done. I'm sure you have a winner here. Best wishes.

Thank you for reading and for the most kind comments. I appreciate your time and pleased that my small attempt at humor in the negotiation skills came through. I wanted it to be a light and airy even though I considered the subject to be serious.

Love this...

As an RN specializing in Alzheimer's care for 35 years I thought back to the few personal items each of our residents could bring into their very limited space in a nursing home that had two or three beds to a room.

Their choices, no doubt muddled by their dementia, were often less than traditional...

Not unlike this fictional situation, their lives were going up in flames and they were rummaging through the dying embers of memories.

Hoping again, to spark a flame? To put a name to a face once more?

As I got to know them, overtime, the one raggedy slipper (remembrance of a deceased spouce)-- Or the one eyed "Velveteen" rabbit (A treasure of a son who never visits)--

These made perfect sense!

I remember a 95 year old woman who wore a large wedding band on a ribbon, around her neck...

"The band never fit, but the man did!" --She twinkled...

I'll be thinking of this poem long after I turn out my light and search for sleep...

My heart is full!

Never! But your post surely stirred up my own experience...

    Thanks for that!

I enjoyed your contest entry, Mystery Author I liked
the way you calmly assessed, for the most part, each
the 5 items you would take with you upon leaving. All
made sense the way you described them. Your words
flowed smoothly with great organization and imagery.
Thanks for sharing and best wishes in the contest, Jan

What an interesting story, and a thought-provoking prompt. I wonder, did you actually go through your house and identify items you would take under such circumstances, and then write the story?

A good entry for this contest. I'm looking forward to reading those of other writers and thinking about this question myself.

I went through my house mentally -- and perhaps, emotionally -- as I chose my 5 items. Thanks so much for reading and commenting.

Is this a true story? I feel terrible for those in the path of a wildfire. Can't imagine having to just up and leave. I live in Hurricane Alley. We have to make those decisions yearly. Evacuate or leave a list of your next of kin with the police department. Such a sobering choice. This was a thought provoking read. Well done.

I don't know if you are in an area where fire threatens your home. I hope not. I can only imagine what it might be like. That threat is slim here, but I still sometimes imagine what I would want to take with me. You've done a wonderful job of sorting through your things, and realizing how much more important your memories are than most of the physical things you considered. It's very well written. Good luck in the contest.

I am not in an area where fire would be considered a major threat, but just a few weeks, someone was mowing a field just a few miles from my house and spark started a fire. It destroyed a major part of a small neighborhood. I listened to some of those people on TV as they expressed their loss. My heart went out to them. Thanks for reading and commenting.
