That is something special for a kid that age. It also seems he has a good head on his shoulders, not wanting to disappoint his mother by being an out-of-control musician. He is on the right path.

I appreciated your breakdown of what you enjoy about the Otago Daily Times. As I'm sure you know, my city is represented by, among others, the world-famous New York Times. I'm proud to have a paper known (most of the time) for its journalistic integrity, and one which has broken major stories, as a representative of the city I love. However, if truth be told, I rarely read the Times because it's so serious and can be so depressing at times!

On the other hand, Long Island Newsday reports the major news but, also, interjects a lot of local and human interest stories (and even published a story of mine). Like you, I enjoy the local stories because they literally hit close to home, and the human interest because, as you said, sometimes a person just needs a break from the doom and gloom.

I absolutely loved the story you included. It's heartwarming to see a talented young man be acknowledged and given an opportunity, and I particularly enjoyed his last lines: "No, I think I'll be a nice guitarist. I don't want to disappoint my mum." There's hope for our young people yet.

If you don't mind a couple of editing points and questions, when you say "... in a recent survey my local newspaper has recently been assessed ...," "recent" and "recently" are redundant.

Also, in New Zealand, is "skilful" spelled with just two "l's," as you had it? In the US, it's spelled "skillful."

What a great story for several reasons. One for the newspaper. One has to take the time to read, research and educate oneself.
The newspaper itself seems to be high quality. I get tired of stories that give good news but then take it down.
"New star discovered, but watch out; it may hit the earth in 2000 years!"
Eddie's story is charming and wonderful. His reaction would start anyone's day off with a smile!
Best wishes,
mary

What a great story. So good that you have such a high quality newspaper, So good also that it balances the usually heavy news with something positive - that's very astute and intuitive and will ensure on-going readership and participation, as will the gender balance in sports reporting. But also what an excellent good news story was presented. good for Eddie, having the moral fortitude and the wisdom to discern what was important for his life, while simultaneously showing love and respect for his mother.

Yay for Eddie! I hope he will keep practicing and not disappoint his mum. How sweet! And I applaud your newspaper and wish all our news shows were like your newspaper!

This story is so cute. It's unbelievable that an adult journalist would ask a young teenager if he looked forward to the sex, drugs and alcohol of a hardened rock guitarist. What would the reaction have been if he had said "Yes?" Instead, he responded in a way any mother would love.

Isn't that precious? That's the sort of thing one wants to hear from our youth, I know how hard it is to stick at something, as punishingly hard as a guitar, both my daughters play very well. A young man called Cody tossed in his stellar music career, Cody Simpson, is a member of the Aussie swim at the commonealth games, and boyfriend of Emma Mckeon the top lady swimmer, isn't that great, it's so good to hear these things, well done Eddie, blessings Roy

A delight to read. Good for Eddie! That young man has his priorities straight. I enjoyed your account of your local newspapers. In the U.S. our newspapers seem to be vanishing due to the TV news channels and the internet. Our local daily cut back to publishing five newspapers a week during the COVID outbreak. Lack of advertising has made it difficult for the paper, as we lost a lot of our big department stores, which always advertised heavily. Good explanation for your preference for the ODT. Let's support our newspapers. I say they're still relevant. judi

Lisa, I am truly impressed by your national and local pride. You make it very clear why you relish reading your Dunedin paper. I was delighted to hear it offers "feel good" stories to balance out the doom & gloom ones. I enjoyed reading Eddie's. Rod
