I loved this poem and the landscape you chose to portray.
Sparkling in your poem are the descriptions of nature, of atmosphere and naturally occurring events: bone-dry air, winter melt, rising sun and puffed up scudding clouds.
The ending is stunning for simplicity and humane appeal.
Well done. Very nice work.

a powerful poem about springtime in the desert southwest. it seems though that the world is burning up and soon in the west there will be just a short winter and a long hot dry fire season. Sad state of affairs.

Thank you very much, Jake, for sharing my poem. It?s shocking how heat has plagued the West this summer. I sure hope that land gets relief and RAIN. Rod

It sounds beautiful! I've never lived in the "high desert" and prefer the ocean but you made spring there a dramatic transformation. My favorite lines were:
A creek newborn from winter-melt
side-winds its way to yonder lake
through blue-grey brush, o'er scattered rocks,
by wizened trees whose torsos shake.
Congratulations on the win, Rod!!

Oh, it is so easy to see why this poem won the contest! It is excellent in every way--skillfully written, creative, vividly descriptive, and so lovely--like the season it describes.

As we view the burgeoning beginnings of Spring, I think of a father watching his newborn grow and develop right before his very eyes. I can imagine our heavenly father, the parent of all the seasons and all the Earth's vegetation, rocks and rivers, watching with pride as his creations begins to grow, develop and prosper right before his majestic eyes.

The only thing I have seen in Nevada, other then Las Vegas, is Red Rock Canyon, which was beautiful. This picture makes me think of desert oases. The artwork is an Impressionist like painting that matches the words well.

The scene I described is more typical of northern Nevada near Reno. Many thanks for reviewing my poem. Rod

A beautifully composed and written poem Rod. It's funny I've often wondered what patriotic means, but some call themselves "patriots" and it's as bad as people calling themselves Christian, and the doing everything but. Loving where we live, or hail from, is simply the things that are familiar, family, friends, football team, beautifully written my friend, blessings Roy

I really appreciate this poem from a western viewpoint.... I am a neighbor California born and bred. Lovely painting too. I especially like the lines: "Trees nuzzled now by bone-dry air
stretch sharp-tipped branches to the sky
as lizards stir from prickly lair."
Your images are so very true and evocative of the western expanses of desert.

Ciao RodG!
I read the entries yesterday below the contest page and I had a very strong hunch that you had written :Early Spring in the High Desert.
I missed the contest when it hit the booth today .
Congratulations, a well deserved win.
Your detailed and vivid description of the desert was a delight to read ( I read it three times ).
How you bring to life the desert fauna and flora in Spring is pure poetry.
Ciao!
