Oh wow, this is a poignant one! And yet the puppy looks at peace doesn't it? (my self-reassurance here!) Having bred pups myself, this is the dread you have because it's such an emotional experience anyway. So your one liner pulled at my heartstrings and was irresistible for me. Thanks for sharing. This is so sad. I can imagine the momma howling. Animals have strong paternal feelings too, as I have experienced with a stray cat who took refuge in our back yard.

A very heartfelt one line poem. It is so true animals grieve. It reminds me of when I watched a mama cat try to get her dead kitten to move.
