Rabbits don't stand a chance in a world of hunters and meat eaters. Unless it is the Wascally Wabbit Bugs Bunny. I hope this was just a fun tale and not a true story. I would hate to think someone shot any body's pet.

Fun read.

Unfortunately, it was true. I must have been 5-8 years of age.

Come on Tom, is the ending to this poem true? A man shot your escaped rabbit, killed him and ate him for supper!! Jeez! Most domesticated animals move differently in the world. I am sorry you as an 8-year-old had to endure this incident.

Yes, he did, and spited me whenever chance permitted asking if I could release another Johnny Darc.

What the hell?? What kind of an adult torment a grieving child over his first pet? You dad should have punched him in the nose. Jeez!

People so quick to use guns on any defenceless animal. Unthinkable. Such a sad post, and I feel for your loss even though it was long ago. Best wishes for the contest.

I tend to agree with you here what sort of man would shoot a harmless pet rabbit, unless he had rabbit stew in mind, which he undoubtedly did, beautifully written Tom, great post, well done, blessings Roy

Awe. How terrible! I guess pet rabbits didn't have much value back then. How mean. I'm sorry you lost your pet. Great sad tale. Good luck in the context.

I am so sorry your pet was killed. This is so sad! You used very good heart felt words and very good imagery from the art work you chose. My dad killed my Easter chicken then I was very young. Then he cooked it for dinner, but nobody would touch it. It made me very sad too. Thank you for sharing. Teri

60 years ago pets were food based not love based

Noooo!! He ate your BUNNY??! Oh, that's unconscionable. Add me to the list of people who hopes he choked on his dinner. Poor Johnny Darc. His life with you began and ended with mayhem. At least, for the time in-between, he was loved and well tended-to.

I hope this does well in the contest.

The story was great, but sad. The poor little rabbit ran into the wrong person. Pet rabbits should not be eaten. When I was a child in Alabama, I probably ate rabbit. My grandmother would wring the necks of chickens and I heard them talking about skinning rabbits. Today, I wouldn't eat a rabbit.

I was seven years old. I had no idea what I was eating.

In Germany, my husband tricked me into eating deer meat. In my mind, Venison was the German word for beef. I was upset after I ate the meat. He asked me how it taste? I remarked, delicious.

Never had venizen. Tough to do as we have a herd dropping by regularly only 30 yards from our kitchen. They blend in with our Herefords

This is an excellent descriptive poem. It tells a vivid story, and your love for your pet is palpable. I enjoyed it very much. Good luck in the contest. Kate xx

Keep the ink flowing. Epson's needs more money. I print everything written. Now beginning Vol 7 which means I have written near 2500 pieces since moving here in 4/`7.

Rabbits do make interesting and entertaining pets. My cousin gave me a rabbit when I was a child and I had him until he died of old age. Your story is well done. I wish you tons of luck in the contest.
