Thank you, Mystery Writer! How can I possibly review this? I'm too unhinged to think straight. I assure you, I am no professional--let alone Lee Child (and he may have a bone to pick with you). A professional would know how to deal with such accolades. I am not. All I can do is thank you from the pit of my cartwheeling stomach. Really. You may have made my year . . . or longer. I thank you.

Incidently, putting 'Mr' in front of Humpwhistle just doesn't ring true. A simple 'Hump' suits me just fine.

Peace, Lee

LOL! Thank you for the sixer!!! The reviews have been pretty fun, I hope you read them when the contest is over, they are very complimentary of your work!

The feedback I am getting is that the rules of the contest will likely disqualify my entry. I wrote this before the contest because I wanted to offer something a little different that would honor your work in a humorous way. The contest came along, and that was an opportunity to be anonymous, and that might add to the fun! Thanks, and keep up the good work! Mystery Writer.

This is an excellent contest entry, and I do agree Mr. Humpwhistle is one of the best. That said, (and I'm not talking about myself) there is always someone better to come along, but for now, we should all strive for excellence and learn from the best of the {Mr. Humpwhistles}. I wish I had a six for you. Best, JohnC

John, if it were written by Mr. Humpwhistle, you would need a six, but since it is not, I do appreciate the 5!

    You're most welcome!

I hope I didn't insult you. The aforementioned six were sincerely meant for your writing, not Mr. Humpwhistle. Sorry, I needed to clarify; otherwise, I'd be up all night.

John, oh hell, no, you got to work harder than that to insult me. LOL, besides I knew what you meant.

Hello mystery writer a good day to you. I hope this finds you well. I loved your In conclusion contest entry it was well written and I couldn't agree more, Mr. Humpwhistle is arguably the best, if not one of the best writers here. If I could just take a fraction of his style of great characters, snappy dialogue, interesting settings, conflicts, and believable resolutions and blend it say that of a Lancellot I might could give James Patterson a run for his money. Alas I am a mere poet in the shadows of extraordinary writers.

Sir, you are too modest! Blending Lancellot and Humpwhistle would indeed be something to behold. I do wonder if we would need a referee? Thank you!

Isn't it said the greatest flattery one receives is self-gratification? I feel as if I read a politician's stump talk praising his opponent while knowing as it was written it was penned thinking how great thou art, the I Am.???

Tom, I think you are dead wrong on that. I think he is a terrific writer, and I wish I had the ability to put words together the way he does. But thanks for doing the contest. The feedback I am getting is that I'll get disqualified, but that's okay.

Hi there,

The main thing I took away from this post was that it's obvious the writer can't tell the difference between very well-crafted, entertaining and colourful prose and the Jack Reacher books (which contain very little in the way of colour or colourful characters in the way Humpwhistle puts together a piece). In fact the quality of the Reacher books has dropped as the series has gone on whereas Humpwhistle continues to write to the highest standard.

There are actually a few professional writers on site and traditionally published authors, as well as copywriters and editors, but you'd never know because few people use their real names here.

I happen to agree that Lee is one of the best, if not the best, writers on site. You can tell by his output which is significantly less than most of the top-ranked writers yet he's always up there in the top ten (which is ridiculous in itself. If the site actually run on talent rather than output and purchasing reviews, the top ten and top five would be significantly different).

One of the things about singling out the best is that there are always detractors and no difference here with writing. Being the best at 'writing' is a tricky proposition as there are so many different fields to it. Is he the best sci-fi writer, or horror writer? How would you know if he doesn't write them. not every writer can turn their hand to different genres. It's a complicated assertion.

On a technical side, this piece may run foul of the committee given the final "stanza" (or paragraph in this case) doesn't start with the required phrase. There are three paragraphs following it.

All the best
GMG

You do make some excellent points! I might disagree a bit, but only a bit with you about the Child books. The point of that comparison was only to use the name, Lee.

I don't care about the contest. I had written the piece earlier in the day with the purpose to do something a little different and hopefully fun to honor a fella who I really enjoy reading. I saw the contest and it looked like a way to do a "blind" submission, which might add some fun as to who wrote, it.

By the way, I really enjoy your work too, I also appreciate the fact that you are willing to do a lot of reviews, even when I am on the negative end of one.

    Thank you.

I actually enjoy writing reviews and critiquing. I find it an excellent way of informing my own writing.

I use FanStory as a playground to try things out and a basic sounding board. It's also a great place to learn if you can find the right people who review and great writing (such as Lee's).

It's funny, I had a 'conversation' a while ago with another writer who didn't like my work, but then they went on to tell me about an anthology they were reading and their favourite story in it - it was one of mine. I didn't tell them, though (I write under a couple of different names). My satisfaction was my own inner glow! lol

We used to have a lot more exceptionally talented writers such as Cumbrialass who don't write on site anymore because they got picked up by traditional publishers.

There's one or two others who have featured in Sci-fi magazine and suchlike.

The landscape on site has changed drastically over the last five or six years. Gone are the days, it seems, when folk posted stories just for fun. These days it's difficult to find stories over 1000 words, and it's getting more difficult to find fiction of any description.

It also used to be that earning a single dollar was considered a high payout! lol

The saddest thing, though, is that there are many, good writers who don't get read because they don't promote well enough, and that's sad. It starts to make the site stagnate with so many similar competitions, low word counts and high payouts.

Thank goodness in the real world, the writer gets paid rather having to pay people to read the work!

I can guarantee you that once the competition is over, many will be going back to see who posted this! I already know. I knew from the writing within two paragraphs! It's a gift 've developed from reviewing a lot. lol

G, Thanks for the great insights, I am still fairly new here. You were one of the first to review my work when I first posted and I was grateful, of course, I had no idea that you were a recognized writer.

I do wish I could write fiction like Lee and you and some others, but I get my brain to work that way.

Being an old man the good news is that my memory still works, so it is mostly nonfiction with a touch of humor for me.

I am not surprised you guessed who wrote it, others have also.

Lee did review it and I think he took in the humorous complimentary way it was intended.

I know I reviewed your last two pieces, and the bio piece is outstanding, I have referred others to read it. Thanks!

Is he really Lee Child, author of Jack Reacher? That makes a lot of sense as he is one of the best writers I have reviewed. Good luck in the contest and thank you for sharing. Have a great week.

Well, he will certainly be pleased about your entry - pleased enough to forgive you if you don't reach his standard of writing! And I think you can be assured of his vote! A great piece, written with humour and skill! Well done. Good wishes for the contest, which I was thinking of entering - but now I probably won't. Lol.

Wendy, please enter the contest! The input I am getting is that my entry will not pass the committee. I do think if Mr. Humpwhistle did review the work he would give it a 1, and vote for somebody else, he does have a standard to uphold!

This is a really great tribute to someone that may be the best writer on this site, although there are some other pretty good ones. He does really good reviews, that I know. I'm not sure he is Lee Child, but he writes that well. I am sure he is good enough to be a professional writer and you did a great job making sure we know it. Best of luck in the contest.

This is fairly well written but not up to Humpwhistle's standards. You were all over the place with what you wanted to cover and what you actually covered. He is more organized than that. Yet you said some nice things about him and gave praise to his work which is highly in order.
Thanks for telling it like it is!

This is a well-written essay about someone named Humpwhistle. I don't know him or his writings, but I will check him out. I am new to this site. I like that your essay was written in a font size that could be easily read. It was also clearly written and stuck to one main idea. Good luck in the contest. Now, I will search the site for Mr. Humpwhistle.
