A person may devote his life to contemplative prayer in a monastery, or simply take a moment to think carefully about life. We must allow ourselves moments of calm and self-understanding to occur to us.

Your haiku reads well, Gypsy. The picture is beautiful.
Great job with the style. I like the deep in reflection--
that could be the mountain and the praying monk.
Respectfully, Jan

Gypsy Rose,
You've written a great Haiku; I love the subtle play on words with "reflection."
Your photo and the graphics you use are beautiful and aesthetic.
Good luck with all your writing.
Cindy

Lovely presentation as always! Your final line brings the whole poem together playing on the word "reflection" which "reflects" the praying of the first line.

I swear, no wine tonight!

Still...

I keep counting 2-9-5!!!

"where Mount Fuji lies at river's edge"

9 syllables right?

Which is fine...but then it's 16 syllables, not 17....

Which is also acceptable? So I should say fine poem and go back uncork the Merlot?

I'm giggling here....

Karenina

American haiku is 17 syllables or less I'm any combination. I guess this is more of the contemporary haiku. I added links, one of them explains why. I understand why so many links can be overwhelming. Contemporary haiku can be written in one to four lines as brief as possible. If you read samples of modern haiku you will be surprised how far they are of the 5-7-5 form many people have in mind. Even Japanese write one to three lines. I try to familiarize different styles of haiku to expose fs to all the possibilities of haiku. Anyway...I could write about haiku all day. LoL..I'll spare you.

Thank you very much for your time and review. I appreciate the feedback.

I do understand that (although I'm notoriously bad at writing them)

I only mentioned the syllable count because you labeled your poem as:
    ________________
2/10/5 Ekphrastic Haiku for Haiku Club
    Praying Monk
    _____________________

And I couldn't find that tenth syllable!

    (Silly me)

I like your poem- good picture presentation of Japan's most iconic mountain- with spiritual religious focus- as I recall- approximately 12k - active volcano- goodness of blossoms- poem about monk praying at waters edge- good job tying the prayer together with the reflection!
